This got buried a while ago...

Is anyone interested in it..

Perhaps a list of people who are interested would be the easiest way of working out wether it's worth considering? Perhaps a petition/poll in a new thread?

Sorry for digging up an old thread but I'm curious cause I think it's a cool project :)

I got the impression there were some existing nodes lying around somewhere... is this the case?

I'm always reaserching what makes the best folding node. I'm going to look into the best parts to compliment the PD 805.

I also noticed that an A64 3000+ can be had for around £60 and combined with a cheap agp board for around £30 makes a killer combo. They seem to overclock to 3700+ speed or even 4000+ speeds with aggresive volts.

What mobo did you pick, Stan? I've been looking to do an 805 as well.

I chose this. It probably won't clock too well but it's cheap and has onboard GFX.

MB-137-AS Asus P5VDC-MX VIA P4M800 Pro Micro ATX (Socket LGA775) Motherboard (MB-137-AS) 1
£34.95 £34.95

It was basically a choice between overclockability and price.
This board won't clock too well but it saves me a few bob on GFX etc.

If it is a complete dud for clocking, I could spend a few quid on a new one but I wanted to see if I could get a decent dual core folder for £350.

Heres a couple of high value nodes.

Best ppd per £:

-PD 805 £82
-DFI Lanparty UT 915P-T12 £43
-OCZ ddr2 value 2 x 256 £28
-Cheap ok PSU £20
-Old harddisk off 'bay £10
-Old graphics card off 'bay £10 (pci or something)

Total: £193

Might need an extra set of ram sticks and a better cooler, you could get a case and psu bundle if need be for a pretty low price. Can anyone beat that? Have i missed anything?

Secondary game rig for folding:

I'm also looking at the A64 3000+ combo because i might want one as a second gaming machine, so i could pop the graphics card in from my main machine when i want to play serious games on it. The rest of the time it would fold.

-A64 3000+ £61 (3800+ is good value too if oc'd)
-Abit UL8 £28
-Kingston 512MB CL3 £26
-Cheap ok PSU £20
-Old harddisk off 'bay £10
-Old graphics card off 'bay £10

Total: £155

Cheapest Folding Node:

-Sempron 2800+ £46
-Biostar NF325-A7 £28
-Kingston 512MB CL3 £26
-Cheap PSU £10
-Old harddisk off 'bay £10
-Old graphics card off 'bay £10

Total: £130

I'm assuming all these boards have overclocking options in the bios, i have avoided a few tempting ones which don't. Would have to do a little more reaserch on this. Of course if you go 2nd hand it gets even cheaper. You can probably get two complete Axp machines for around £100 and they would fold ok.

Now i just need to think of an excuse to get one...

Deduct £20 off each one then. For someone only buying one or two they might not want the hassle of all that tho.

Edit: What sort of ppd does an oc'd 805 on 24/7 get?

Those cheap boards won't have an nic and if they do it probably won't have pxe or whatever it is.

A folding node would not need a hard disk or a graphics card. Netboot and SSH solve those problems.
Assuming you can find a motherboard that'll POST without. Pretty rare I believe.

Oh, and it used to be the case that cheap Gfx catd > onboard. Not sure if that's still true.

All the 6100 boards i looked at apparently had no overclocking options so it worked out cheaper to get an old agp board and stick a cheap card in it. However, anything 6100 based from Asrock ought to be ok.
