Been going round in circles in regard to getting a new build sorted and finally ready to take the plunge and go for a new build. Currently have the following:
AMD X2 6000+ CPU
ASUS M2N32-SLI Wireless Edition Motherboard
2GB Corsair DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX
Hiper Modular 580 Watt PSU
2 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB SATA-II Hard Drives
Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Edition
1 x Gainward Geforce 7900GTX 512mb DDR3

My PSU is sounding rough at the minute so have recently purchased a Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 650W ATX2.2 Modular SLi Compliant Power Supply from OCUK to be either used to get my old build going or will go striaght into a new build. The last time i had serious thoughts about a replacement i intended on keeping the hard drives, but recently have started getting low on space.

any thoughts? was thinking the 900 - 1200 range, could go slightly over if its compelling!

go i7, run the 2 samsungs in raid and get a 1tb samsung for storage.

what monitor/res do you use, do you game (what res, AA/AF etc) ?, if gaming maybe go ati 4890/nvidia 275 depending on the resolution you game at.

what case do you currently have, happy with it ?

couldnt you just get more ram, a higher CPU and new grpahics card/s?

Or do you want to go I7/DDR3?

Whats it going to be used for mainly?

Thanks for the reply.
Currently have a Samsung SM-2053BW Aqua 20" Widescreen LCD Monitor and run the desktop at 1680 x 1050. Basically i try and run my games as high as possible, but have recently been restricted by what the system is capable of :) Would mainly be used for gaming so AA is typically at x4 but again is restricted by my kit.

Currently have a Thermaltake soprano with a clear side panel, whilst i dont mind the look of it, i have noticed that it tends to run a bit hot and in hindsight i should have invested in some quieter fans! To be honest i think i could benefit from getting a case with better airflow

I would definetly consider an I7 build. Not sure the upgrade path is there with the cpu though problably wrong, must admit havent really ketp up with amd advances as i have been casting envious eyes on the intel developments of late :D
I upgraded from a 4800+ to a 6000+ early last year and wasnt sure if there was anything else i can support with my motherboard?

£900-1200 you're looking at i7, no doubt about that.

Especially when you can get a 920 D0, motherboard and 6gb ram for <£500 on TWO!

i dont know off the top of my head so ill let someone else tell you :) Im an intel man.
I just wouldnt have thought the cpu would be that bad, unless gaming includes supcom lol.

I7 920, 6gb ddr3 1600 (lowest speed you want to get to make it worth it) and a graphics card that fits your budget after other things such at gtx 295/4870x2/4890/gtx 285/4870. Get youself a hanns G 28" that does 1920 res (or a 24"), mobo which oges with it (ive not looked at i7 rigs in detail so i dont know), and a new shiny case...something large if you want good airflow.

That should nicely eat up your budget :)

i wasnt meaning not to get that if he went new, I was just thinking that depending on his board he may be able to just upgrade and see a similar performance increase without shedding so much cash (again, im not clued up on AMD stuff since the a64's)

came up with the following and its well within the budget range, could always top it out by going for a solid state boot drive, or set a couple up in raid :D

possibly change the case as well if its not too your liking.

Intel Core i7 920 D0 Stepping (SLBEJ) 2.66Ghz (Nehalem) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail + Far Cry 2 Game £241.98 (£210.42)

Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4890 1024MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail £195.99 (£170.43)

Gigabyte EX58-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard £169.99 (£147.82)

Akasa Eclipse 62 Case - Aluminium (No PSU) £120.74 (£104.99)

OCZ Gold 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel (OCZ3G1600LV6GK) £79.99 (£69.56)

Samsung SpinPoint F1 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103UJ) £72.99 (£63.47)

Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366/LGA775) £45.99 (£39.99)

Noctua NF-P12 Vortex-Control 120mm Quiet Case Fan - 3 Pin £34.48
(£29.98)

Here is an i7 spec:

Keep your sound card. The OS can be removed if you already have a 64 bit OS or are going the using windows 7 RC1.

Edit: Removed unneeded PSU

Thanks for all the replies gents!

seems like a general consensus on the graphics card and ram!

Also are gigagbyte the route to go for in terms of motherboards for i7 then?
