Hey all, i recently had my mobo and CPU die out on me, i looked into it and bought an AM2+/AM3 mobo and a quad core of some descript, which both seem fine, but the problem im having is stalling and problems with vista crashing out

basically the system seems to jam up and wont load things sometimes, im wondering if its the ram i have installed, its 800mhz whilst the mobo says 1066mhz slots, and also has 1333mhz slots, obviously the 800mhz fitted into the 1066mhz slots so i just guessed id try that, and it seems to work, but the computer stalls randomly.

also, when i press control alt delete, the vista menu for task manager etc, doesn't come up i get an error message saying it failed to initialize or something, its pretty frustating having to restart the computer because it keeps freezing and stuff

NVIDIA graphics updates also freeze the computer, at the exact same point of installation every time, i can't quite figure it out, also windows updates seem to freeze from time to time so i can't get the latest service packs etc.

anyone have any idea whats going on with this system, i could do with having a desktop that actually works and is more reliable than my trusty laptop! ¬_¬

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 840 "95W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail
ASRock N68C-S UCC GeForce 7025 (Socket AM3/AM2+) DDR2/DDR3 microATX Motherboard
2x 1gb Giel black dragon 800mhz ram
1000watt oczproxstream psu
9800gt 1gb gfx card

thats the basic spec for the system, obviously more ram would be ideal, but will it fix the issues im having, if it will i may aswell get some 1333mhz, as i have 32 bit vista anything past 3gb is wasted.

Did you do a fresh install of windows?

If you get 4 gig of ddr3 ram (should work with am3 cpu), think 32bit os will still see 3.25 gig and is a lot cheaper than ddr2.

I think that motherboard has a revision 1 PCIe slot and the graphics card is designed for a rev 2 slot. I do not know if this causes an issue or is compatible. Check out the rest of the PC by removing the card and just using the onboard graphics for a while. If that causes the freezing to disappear, you have one sort of answer.

As stated above you needed a fresh windows install with the new motherboard.

Memory speed should not be an issue. 800MHz will work OK if correctly recognised in the BIOS.

hmm

i'll try without the graphics card but thats kind of stupid, i have 2 9800gts and it would suck if i cant use them, they are quite old cards now i would have thought they would work, yes vista is freshly installed, its trying to update to new service packs and thats when its freezing, ill see how it goes anyways

I know, I had similar problems with this board for a friend, and I thought initially it was the IDE port, but it was not, it was freezing. Could only get it working with the on board graphics. This PCIe slot has only half the bandwidth of later rev. 2 slots so it may restrict the 9800gt a bit (not sure).

:(

aye, i wish id have looked at the other motherboards available, i just wanted to get one that would work with an old AM2 cpu, which this one apparently would, but then i found that the cpu in question was 125nm and the max for this mobo is 95nm, now its freezing even with a 95nm cpu, i don't know whats going on but ive removed the graphics card and it still freezes, if its not the ram or the graphics card, surely its the motherboard, both the motherboard and cpu are brand new from ocuk, someone suggested any cpu with 95nm would work, but i did try to get one that was on the website as supported, which this one seemed to be, so i can't really understand why the pc is having problems.

If you can, send it back under DSR (7 days). Personally I would get a 700 or 800 series chipset rather than an nforce one for AMD.

andy.

hmm ive had it 29 days now andy, sadly ive been on holiday basically since i recieved it, so i put it in the system and only managed to start installing yesterday when i got home, rather frustrating!:( not sure what options ive got, i may try different ram configurations as i have a few different sticks, hopefully that will bring me something.

well

check the ram sticks one by one with memtest 86+
How did the mobo and cpu die before?

basically, it was a shortage or something, the mobo and cpu seemed to just not stay on, id press the button and the computer would power up for around 30 seconds, then turn off, no popping and the green light stayed on, no sounds to declare the board fried or anything, as for the CPU, it works in the new motherboard, its just too high a wattage for it, therefore its not going to be stable with it no matter what i do!

i can memtest the ram, but ive had these sticks 3 years and theyve not failed me yet!

My solution for this board which is not very helpful to you was to put it on the bay. I lost very little actually and I bought an asus 700 series board to replace it which was a bit more expensive.

andy.

cheers andy, ive contacted OC's rma team and ill see what they say,if they offer a replacement, i think ill just stick it on ebay as you said, it probably just cant handle the equipment im using in conjunction with it. cheers for your answers they have been the most helpful!

computer seems to be stable now, after about 30 restarts and 6 hours of installing updates, now my MSI laptop seems to be bluescreening though so even more problems :(
