However, I don't know where to start.

I don't want anything amazing, just something to play some old records on, among some new ones that I have just got my hads on.

I don't want to be spending much at all though tbh. I've been scouting round on the the bay and looking at trying to get something second hand for about £50. No luck so far, as the ones that do go cheap always have something wrong with them.

Say if i was buying new, what sort of price and any recommendations I should go for?

This is just for simple listen to records through my amp that has phono input.

Cheers guys.

Thorens TD150 or TD160 can be picked up cheap and can be tweaked and modified to give very impressive performance.

Failing that an old Rega deck.

I was quite surprised how much these things cost. Even a Bush one goes for ~£50! Makes me wish I'd kept all my old ones.

Rega Planar series or a Linn Basik/ Axis can be picked up for a couple of hundred 2nd hand.

You know where to look :D

Do you have a phono stage/ pre amp?

Yea, I was gobsmacked when I saw the price they were going for, I thought I would have been able to pick up a functional one pretty cheap with them not being as widely used as they used to be. Although I suppose there is a big collectors market for them.

Vinyl is bigger than most people think mate....it never really went away :D

LINN's latest turntable with all sing dancing parts is getting on fo £10K :D

Even though it looks like my old Rega is worth around 100 quid, I'd be loathed to sell it just in case I needed it in the future. Plus it's a work of art and just looking at it brings back so many good memories. Had it from new, 20 years ago!

Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! Set it up! ;)

I do love the sound of vinyl. Sounds amazing.

I've never had the pleasure of listening to it in my own personal space :(

Seems that it's something I'm just going to have to dream of considering the prices of some of the kit I have just been looking at.

I bought a brand new Bush turntable for my mum on eBay for £35 delivered. It had an in-built phono stage which can be disabled if required (I did).

You wouldn't expect it to be much good but I have to say it sounded fantastic on a reasonably decent Sony separates system - far better than a CD on the same amp + speakers. I was thoroughly impressed.

Spend £100 and I think you'll be very, very pleased with the result.

Hi 9 :D How's Tricks? You won't believe what cart I ended up with for my LP12/ EKOS :D

K18II

NEW!

:D

I used a K18 original on my Ekos many years ago, superb cart, but it NEEDED an Itok or EKOS to come alive. The old Akito was not up to it. Then went to a Troika, now a Lyra Evolve 99.

How much did you get it for...............not tempted by an Adikt ? or a MC

It was found by my mate (Linn dealer) in a drawer a few weeks back when he was having a clean out at his shop. Brand new, sealed - including fitting....

£60 :D

Wipes the floor with the A&R P77 MM I had on before it.

Its the full red body K18 II (Last model they did) not the red headshell/ grey cart body K18.

Massive saving on the Adikt I was looking act and similar performance wise.

Noticed a massive difference in the midrange, especially vocal quality and midrange bass tones.

:D

I've still got my old pioneer PL12D with shure cartridge. Pulled it out, connected it up a while ago and it still works but I had to replace the drive belt:p My kids didn't know what to make of it, lol

Hey guys, bit of an update.

After weeks searching ebay and bidding for a few Rega Planars (they eventually went for way out my budget of £100 inc delivery, i was after a miracle i suppose)

I came across a few Acoustic Research EB101's.

The first one I bid on ended up going for £98 inc, but the second with original arm and new Stanton 500-11cartridge stylus I mangaged to bag for £52 inc.

It came this morning, set it up, and currently playing In Rainbows upon it after a listen through some old singles that I've been collecting. Damn vinyl sounds great, this turntable seems at first to be a bit of a steal. If I had my camera I would post some photos.
