So not to pollute the Why would anyone use Windows? thread.

I used to use Automatix to install all the codecs and stuff on an Ubuntu install, is this still the best thing to use? Or is there something else out there?

cheers

Kimbie

I used to use Automatix too, and it used to work very well for me, however I remember some people from the Ubuntu development team saying something about it being sloppy about the way it did its thing. As such it was never officially supported.

There is an alternative which is supported as of 8.04 called Ultamatix. I've not used it though, so I can't say whether its any good. Instead I just use the ubuntu-restricted-extras packages (you need to enable them as they're not enabled by default due to the fact they're not open source).

Have a read of this page for instructions... https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

Have had too many issues with VLC on *nix. mplayer for the win - it has no gui by default and a god awful one if gmplayer is used - but you can install smplayer which is a very nice front end for it :)

Always a useful site that one.

Automatix did do some weird stuff on the back end, though it's been a while since I looked at it and I've forgotten what exactly it was it did. It worked, but far from the best approach.

Ubuntu-restricted-extras covers most of my needs and the rest can usually be covered by a quick google :)
