Up til last night had never bothered looking at mem usage.
When I finally added it to AB's on screen display, I saw that my settings were having it go over 2GB - around 2.2.
With adding 2x AA, this went up to about 2.6gb.
I had to drop shadows to high from ultra to get it just on 2GB, and while I didn't play long after, it felt like I was having fewer of the intermittent fps drops I would have.
So if this is accurate, it may explain why I can struggle to run AA on the game.
