Aftermarket cooler for HIS Radeon HD6870?

The fan on my graphics card is starting to go and I'm thinking of replacing it, since I don't really need an upgrade yet.

Was thinking of the Arctic Accelero S1 Plus. The product description says it supports the 6870, but I have no idea if my HIS is a reference design 6870 or if HIS have made any weird customisations of their own!

If anyone owns the same card as me, can you recommend a cooler that'll fit it?

And for everyone else, is that Arctic a good one to go for or can you recommend anything better and/or cheaper?

The AC S1 is passive unless you add proper fans to it, your 6870 will overheat imo.

AC Twin Turbo II is what you should be looking for, but just had a look and they have increased in price drastically, about a third in price-if you can get a second hand one cheap then that's the one to get.

The Turbo III is out too but the price is even worse.

The original Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo could fit and is really cheap if you want to live dangerously and taking a chance it fits.

Before all that though, I would try spraying a little lithium grease straight into the bearings on the fans if you can before buying anything- I would remove the cooler first as not to spray the card.

The Accelero Twin Turbo tyhey have on here seems to be an add-on fan for the S1 - is that what you're talking about? Anyway, it's out of stock on OCUK and I'd like to buy from here since we get free UPS delivery - the noise is getting annoying enough that the sooner I can get it the better!

I had a look at the Twin Turbo II and III and you're right, it is way too expensive. Wouldn't spend that much on an aftermarket cooler when for another £50 I can just get a new graphics card (faster than the one the cooler's going on!).

I'll take a risk that the S1 fits and order it - I wasn't planning to run it passively anyway: from the look of the photos on the product listing it comes with brackets to hold fans, and I have a few spare ones I can fit on it. Then I can finally feel justified that the big box of overclocking spare parts is finally coming in handy! :)

If your strapping proper fans to it, the S1 could be ok, don't know what's in the package, but make sure you identify and put heatsinks onto the vrms too.

Well there seem to be some small square heatsinks in the package too - presumably ramsinks? Not sure if the VRMs need some as well, I don't think the stock heatsink covers them. But yeah, not sure what the system for fastening fans onto the S1 is like, but if none of my spare fans fits I also have a Zalman Bracket that I can use - I'm actually feeling pretty smug that I might actually need the crap in my bits box! :p

The square ones look like ramsinks, are the rectangular ones for the VRMs?

I bought an older version of the S1 and yes, there were small sinks for other components on the card. At a glance the design doesn't seem to have changed much.

At the time I don't think the S1 had any system for attaching normal fans, it was made with the Turbo Module in mind: each fan had a clip on the bottom which would slide in between two of the fins on the heatsink and hold it there. If you want to stick a standard fan onto it you'll need something else which doesn't attach to the heatsink. Either that or you'll have to improvise some method with elastic bands and duct tape! :p
