I'm currently looking to buy a new car - either a 55 plate Leon Cupra R or an 06 ish plate Astra VXR.

Now my current car doesn't have cruise control and its an extra I miss when feeling lazy as I do a fair amount of driving and mainly motorway miles (24-30k miles per year). I know that the Astras have the correct wiring in place and some Vauxhall dealers will add cruise control for £100 ish.

Does the Cupra come with the wiring ready and would Seat add cruise control or can it not be done? I know many of you have the Cupra so thought you may know by chance!

Thanks - and any opinions of which car to go for would also help :)

Is a Leon Cupra R really the sort of car do to 30k a year in? All of its talents are wasted on the Motorway, and instead it would just show you its flaws and annoy you.

But to answer your question, its prewired, yes. Pretty cheap to do.

£55 for the bits or £170ish fitted.

The wiring isn't already in place, you need to take the airbag and wheel off, change the indicator stalk for a new one then run a few wires from some pins under the dash to the ECU under the bonnet then add the feature into the car using Vag-Com.

I had it added to mine but didn't do it myself.

Ok its probably a mix of about 50% motorway, 25% A road and then 25% some lovely contryside roads/lanes so a full mix - but thats currently. Once I move it will be A roads mainly and less mileage, but thats not 100% set in stone yet.

I'd like a bigger, more powerful car than my Fiesta ST - not too fussed about the extra cost really as I've got money to cover that.

Fire - would Seat fit it for me for approx £170 then? Its costly compared to Vauxhall but seems its more work so fair enough, not going to attempt it myself as I'd break everything! :)

Going to SEAT direct will cost you a fair whack. Find a VAG specialist and then the £170 quote is realistic (Firestar was quoting from VOTEX in Congleton IIRC).

It's not so much the extra cost, as the Cupra R can be quite frugal (if you really try), its more that its just not suited to cruising up and down the country, it's not that comfortable, its not particularly well sound proofed to the outside world, and it's pretty spartan in toys/spec (as you have already found with the Cruise Control).

I'd be looking more at something like a 330i/ci.

Right, well at least it can definately be done so thats a plus for the Cupra.

The difference in price between the two I'm looking at is probably about £2.5k on average, is the Astra worth that much more? Same sort of performance etc - although maybe a few extras.

I had Cruise Control retro-fitted to my Octavia vRS.
I could have done it myself - around £60 in equipment.
However I wasn't too happy with that route - visions of not being able to get everything back together and cars catching on fire :)

In the end I spoke to one of the guys over at the Briskoda website.
He fitted it for me with official VAG parts for £160.

On the Leon Cupra R the wiring is already in place it was only the very early Leons/MK4 Golfs that need the extra cable to the ECU my friends 51 plate Leon had the wiring in place however anothers X plate one did not. By the time Cupra R came along it was already in place.

I have fitted a stalk on a Cupra R and enabled it with vagcom and it worked fine. The scary bit is taking the airbag out ! The stalk was £55 if I remeber correctly. VW have a fixed price £150 to retro fit cruise I would expect if you take a Leon they would do it on this also as the parts are the same.

Thanks for the help everyone, much appreciated.

If the leon and price stacks up when I go to see it (and its still there) I will probably get it :) If I dont ill look again in a few months.

I know on the MK4 astras its fairly easy to install cruise control. Not sure on the VXRs though. Definatly try out both though, I know which one I would go for.

Which? I've tried the Astra and enjoyed it, although I know they will keep being made wheres the Mk1 Leons stopped at 55 plate and I wanted one when I was poor and at uni, so its sort of filling an old and realistic dream car I guess.

The VXRs are easy to fit cruise control to as they all have the wiring ready, Vaux will normally do it for about £120 all inc.

Without having driven any Leons before, or testing the Astra or any of its competition?

Ok, I've tested the Astra already last weekend, really liked it although the traction was a little poor I thought. Inside it was nice and the seats were really good, reasonably quiet for the most part, although all I could hear was the remus :)

The Leon I will test, if its good then its likely to be a go-er depends how good, compared to the astra, and prices etc. I tend to change my car a fair bit as I get bored, so maybe the Leon then an Astra - no idea!

Is it any wonder given the rather bull at a gate way you appear to rush into car purchase? I almost added 'No wonder so many people get bored so fast if they buy cars like this' to my last post, wish I had now!

Don't rush things. Test drive a Leon properly. Then go and take a Focus ST for a spin. Find a Golf GTI somewhere and have a go in that. Perhaps try an older Impreza.

THEN decide what to buy. Who knows, by buying something you've actually bothered to research and make sure is right for you you might last more than 5 minutes before you get bored.

Desire for more power I guess, I'll see what I can fit into my weekend - not loving the looks of the others you suggested but may try a Mazda 3 MPS if I see one about. Thanks.

Those remus exhausts sound great! We've a friend with one and you can hear him coming before you see him. :D

Anyway...if the mk5 Astra is anything like the mk4 then it will be easy to fit cruise control. If the wiring is in place which I would expect it to be on the VXR then the cheapest way of doing it would be to look for a CC stalk at a Vauxhall spares day or on ebay and then find someone with a Tech2 who will do it for you. We are lucky enough to have someone in our region with one who fitted CC to a friends mk4 for £20. Bargain!
