aftermath of a crash

On the way home from work last night, I was about to exit an island when the car in front suddenly braked to a halt for no apparant reason.

I did an emergency stop and despite not follwoing closely, the roads were wet and I narrowly managed to avoid a collision, only for the car behind to hit me at speed pushing me into the car in front.

All drivers emmerged from their cars, no one hurt and we agreed to pull over from the island to a safe spot to exchange details.

My car had touched lightly the tow bar of the car in front and I have a small crack on my front bumper and slight scratches on my rear bumper. The car behind, a c class looked totally smashed in.

There were 3 guys in the car I hit (an old toyoya corolla) had 3 guys in - all complaining of next problems depsite that fact that i was fine and had taken the brunt of the impact.

The seemed very organised and strangely wanted home addresses. They have left me with a false phone number, god knows if the address and reg were correct. They also claimed to live just around the corner but drove off in the opposite direction to what they had travelled and gave an address the other side of the city. They bizarly wanted to shake hands before depating!

The guy who hit me has called today, already informed his insurance and admitted liabilty so no worries on that score.

Question is, am I correct to think the whole thing is dodgy and should I contact the local police or will they not be interested? Very to frustraing to be working hard to earn a living while scum like this are out to scam the system.

No harm in informing the police. They clearly set the whole thing up. Shame the Merc driver will ultimately be the one who suffers from it.
Although probably his fault for not paying attention..

Bradford is quite a bad place for this happening apparantley.

Probably is a scam to get compensation, but proving it will be pretty much impossible. Cant see why they would give you false details though

Sounds dodgy to me, I would definitely go to your local police station and give them the reg and type of vehicle also name of driver, They will hopefully tell you if the info is correct, and if it isn't then you can report them for giving you false info at the scene of an accident.

In a situation such as this, it's always advisable to call the Police and have them attend. Even for small incidents and minor collisions. Just curious, why did you not do this?.

Sorry, but that is just unfeasible. I would think you are a proper douche if you try and get the police in on a minor bump... not to mention they don't have the capacity to come to every small incident.

I wouldnt say that is good advice.

What appears to have happened here is, they thought they could catch you unaware.. you wernt but unfortunately the chap behind was.. report it.. if anything it builds a profile of the guys which will stop them in the future.

How is it unfeasible?.

Ask the other parties involved to wait till the Police attend, then call your local Police office ( not 999 obviously ) and explain what has happened. They will attend.

Anyone who bumps into you who isn't really keen for the Police to get involved/attend obviously has something to hide.

I wouldn't think twice about calling the cops to a minor bump involving the amount of individuals the OP has specified. If it was a one on one bump concerning two drivers of two individual vehicles then I would just exchange details.

But going by the amount of scams that are currently circulating regarding this sort of thing, if a *bump* involves more than one vehicle/more than two people then it would certainly be prudent to involve the authorities.

I have had similar situations tried in Bradford recently - on the A650 near Netto and on the ring road near the M606 - thankfully, whilst the truck was not carrying 28tons of whatever and therefore it stopped without hitting the car that tried to scam me.

Report it.

The Police operator will ask "Any serious injuries?" you reply "No" and they don't generally want to know.

Yup that's what they asked me when I my car was hit, I said no so they told me to go to the police station tomorrow to report it. They called me back 20mins later to ask if it was in the way of the road after I told them my rear wheel was severely damaged. :o

Sounds about right. Most forces don't attend damage only RTC's. Unfortunately police time is a finite resource (like everything else that costs money) so unless theres an issue with vehicles blocking the road or an injury, most police forces won't turn out to it.

Out of interest, were the 3 guys white british?

Obviously a scam though, doesn't really matter about the C class driver admittingly liability to his insurers since he would be considered at fault anyway for going into the back of you.

HOWEVER, you are likely to be "at fault" for bumping the car in front, and the fact they got out claiming they had sore necks basically means that they'll be blaming you, insurance company pays for their made-up whiplash, etc.

I'd speak to your insurance company pronto and tell them you think it's a scam, though I imagine it won't make any difference to the outcome.

tl;dr: Merc driver was in on the scam with the guys in front.

Next time, plant it and help remove the scum from the gene pool.

People like this absolutely astound me. Clearly a scam. Someone posted on OCUK about something VERY similar a few months back I'm sure. I would love for these scammers to get properly hit by a 28ton truck and see how they like it.

What's wrong with people :( They'll cause this much inconvenience just for a few quid in compensation, why don't they just get a job and get on with their lives, how is this the way to go :(
