Im wondering if anyone has had a similar problem.

When I enter certain areas ie Cannibal Caves or the Villas in Tarantia Noble I get a massive
frame drop for a nice 40fps to a slideshow 8 fps.

When I disable shader model 3 it runs great again. It only happens in these two areas and only with shader model 3.0 enabled.
I have set all the driver settings to default.

Spec in sig and 175.19 drivers.

i think there is an issue with the handling of particle effects, those areas are heavy with it. changing the shader model is the way to fix it, but it is a known issue and will be fixed at some point (maybe!!).

mini hijack, im running on a lappy, on a 8600mgt butonly getting 12 fps with everything on low. any suggestions?

ty, but its a brand new laptop, cpu running at 2.6ghz, 4 gigs of ram, but the gpu doesnt seem to hack it, im sure the 8600mgt is dx10, but a low end one.

You can improve game performance by adjusting AA in the game (assuming you get sudden stuttering) it is caused by Memory leak.

For example:

AA is off -> turn to 2xAA -> Turn back off

This process will cause Video Ram to be dumped and to be reloaded which basically can sort your FPS out drastically if you go through a few areas and suddenly slowdown.

Not an Inspiron is it? Spec sounds similar to mine!

Mine runs fine, in generally turning draw distances lower (300-500) instead of 2000+ is the way to go, disable grass (after turning draw distance on it to 0) and change textures to medium.

I run it at 1680x1050 on "high" with these settings, get 15-20fps in city and 30-40 in outside areas, although it varies a lot especially when particle effects are involved. There is a settings near the top of the advanced graphics page which only has off/low/high in it, can't remember the name of the setting but if it's on high it'll drag the FPS down a lot and for little graphical improvement.

Draw distances seems to be the best way to improve FPS on laptops, made a huge improvement to mine.

The game is notable for it's low performance on high-spec machines, and sometimes good performance on low-spec machines. As Jimbu said, just got to wait for them to (eventually) make the required fixes and changes.

Also should have said first, my mate has a 3870 and his runs fine in the said areas. No hit fps wise.

Surely this is just a setting in my drivers/game that causes this.

There's a lot of things that can affect it, the client needs to be optimised anyway it's pretty awful. Drivers can have an impact but it's more likely graphics card related and actual hardware that's conflicting with the client, some high end ATI users have awful performance that's giving them lower FPS than people on basic cards.

But what your talking about is in general, mine runs sweet 1680x1050 8XQAA 16XAT any other place. Just those two areas it dies, literally!

I have all sliders at the top (Except Grass = Off) and rarely get below 40 and its smooth enough to play.

I'm using the beta 177.35 drivers - seemed to give a decent fps boost although still area's where it lags out a bit. And not 100% sure of stability.

The gfx settings are buggy as hell, low settings seem to perform worse than high for some people and it occasionally resets the settings without changing the sliders.. So...

Start AoC and click "High" then restart it
Disable SM3 and use 2.0, Disable Shadows
Disable AA then Enable AA then Disable AA
High Quality NPC distance usually defaults to Max - Set to like 200m
Adjust view distance a little if required.

The new patch you can also change particles, set to self\party instead of everyone.

Personally running 1920x1200 @ 40-50fps most of the time. Can dip to 15-20 in busy dungeons and another group in view.

Try clicking the high option and see what happens. I get better frame rates on high than i do on medium and dont change any of the other settings, just click the high button.
There are optimal setting for your setup, its just finding them thats the problem.

Yea its something stupid if you ask me, dont see any reason for it being like night and day compared to the rest of the world if it wasnt.
