Age of Empires 3 - uber lag in standalone.

I've got hold of a copy of AOE3 and it's great, until i get any water on the screen, i try and attack another ship and the game just stops, i get the occasional sound and it drops to about 10 frames per minute. If i walk away for about 20 minutes it seems to sort itself out, but it's doing my head in, the game flows fine if i'm just playing on dry land.

Running a PB lappy, 1gb ram, 1.4ghz celly, not a clue what the video is, but it's played halo, CS and CnC Generals fine.

Patched to 1.9, not a clue what else to do.

Any ideas?

Given the specs you already have told us, my best guess is that the video card is integrated and not up to the job of displaying the water, which requires a card with some decent shader horsepower.
 
Yeah integrated graphics and only a celeron 1.4 will definatley hurt aoe performance. Have you got all the special water effects turned off?
