I'm aware that PMKeates have already started a "Best RTS" thread, although I had this thread already worded and was interested to know if anyone else still play AOEII? I know old game is old and there have been sequels with 3D acceleration, but AOEII is the one that I keep going back to. I dunno why, but I like the gameplay more than 3D graphics of the later ones.

For those who started out in RTS with Warcraft 1 & 2 like myself, AOEII was naturally the next choice. That had me hooked throughout year 2000, with the expansion too so that you had 18 civilisations to play. Every subsequent year to this very year, I still play it for a couple of months at a time.

There is support available on the web, and the mod community still seems to be thriving for this timeless game. Anyone else in the same boat?

Btw, for those struggling with colour palette issues in Windows 7, you can just merge this into the registry:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectDraw\Compatibility\aoe2x10cp] "Name"="age2_x1.exe" "ID"=hex:EC,33,74,3B "Flags"=hex:00,08,00,00

Ending explorer.exe after starting the game fixes the issue as well, without any registry fiddling.

But you need to keep doing that, so the registry one would be more permanent. :p

Have not played in few years, but I used to play when I was at uni 2v2 LAN with few other mates nothing beats it! Still one of the best games RTS ever made!

Ahhh, glad I wasn't the only one :-)

I do remember those LAN nights in uni halls in early 2000 so well. 6 of us, 3 vs 3, allowing ourselves 3 hours to play the game, 9PM-midnight then have a midnight snack. At 5AM, 8 hours later, we were still playing an unfinished game and we had to save it!

What were you favourite civilisations? I think everyone started out with Franks as it was one of the first campaigns and it had the strong paladins. Then one smart Alec will of course roll a camel-based civ (like Saracens) to counter horseback, and then someone else will roll Teutons and basically wtfpwn all of us with their damn Teutonic Knights lol!

I think my favourite civ though would have to be the Mongols. I liked how they were good at countering a siege but were also good with their own siege units.
