AGP 7800GS vs X850

Pretty neck and neck IMO. And i've used both cards in this rig.

For me, the 7800GS just about gets the nod, more features than the X800/X850s.

As said the x850xt pe is still the fastest card but the 7800gs supports sm3.0 so it depends on if you want to sacrifice a few fps and have better quaility or the other way around.

They are about the same speed but the 7800GS is a lot more future proof and far more powerful shaders- will standa more of a chance in a game like UT2007.

What I find with my 7800GS, is that while the highest FPS is lower than the X850XT, the lowest FPS is higher. This means that there is far less lag when the going gets busy. I've tried Quake 4, Painkiller, Doom 3, and (shudder) NFS:MW, and there is very little lag, and the "lower" FPS is all but unnoticeable.

I'm going to try and pick up a copy of Serious Sam 2 so I can bench the HDR.

Hi there

Also remember X850 is no longer made, just because OcUK stills sells it does not mean its still in production we just bought the last of the stock piles up as we knew AGP demand was gonna carry on for quite a while.

Once X850 XT has gone 7800 GS and 6800 GS will be the only solutions left and both of those are only short term products.

Id go for the x850, in the latest graphical intense games like Fear/CoD2, the x850 wallops the GS, the x850 is still the fastest AGP card, but once it has gone then it will be the 7800 GS as its just come out.

From what I can gather the stock card is a little slower but if you get the pre-overclocked cards (XFX EE) it's faster

All I can hope is that ATI will respond with an AGP X1800XL (or higher!) but that's not all that likely!

At default speeds, the x850 xtpe is still the fastest, the default core speed of the 7800gs is fairly modest (375) though a little more ambitious on the memory front (1200).

But more companies seem to be selling 7800GSs pre-overclocked. XFXs card for example comes in at 440/1300, I believe this may well tip the scales in it's favor.

NOW, if only OCUK would stock EVGAs cards!!!

Their "Superclocked" version cranks it all the way up to 460/1350!!! Surely this would sweep the board.

I'm still chugging along with my trusty old EVGA 6800 Ultra Extreme, though I'd be most interested to see how these new cards faired. My AGP based system is still the only one I fully trust!

Yeah but what about an overclocked X850 surley that would be quicker as it is the quicker card when standard

Perhaps, but I've not found x850 PEs to be very solid overclockers, most seem pretty maxed out as they are, besides, if Evga are selling their card pre-clocked to that speed, it may have more headroom still, apparently they're also planning a KO edition!

a lot of reviews I've seen seem inconclusive.

Hi there

All EVGA is doing is clocking their cards to the max. All the 7800 GS cards hit approx 500MHz core and 1400MHz memory without any fancy cooling or volt modifications. EVGA charge crazy prices, might as well just buy a BFG, XFX or POV 7800 GS and clock it yourself and not pay the premium.
