I haven't overclocked a graphics card since my GF4 Ti4400, so not sure if I am doing this right. Anyway I've had my 7900GS a few months now and thought I would try overclocking it using coolbits.

Stock settings are 450 / 660 and max temp is 62c

I increased the mhz of the GPU by 10mhz at a time (and pressing the test changes button) till I got to 575mhz then I ran 3dmark 05 to make sure it was fine. I increased the memory the same as the GPU till I got to 785 and the "test changes" said my overclock was to much so I put it down to 775 and ran 3dmark 05 ok.

3d mark05 Scores:

Stock: 6497 (450/600 - 62c)
GPU OC: 6791 (575/600 - 68c)
GPU+MEM OC: 6858 (575/775 - 68c)

I didn't actually keep going on the GPU till it said my overclock was to high but is a 125mhz increase on the GPU pretty good? should I keep going more? Also is the extra 3d mark points really worth it?

<edit> something else I forgot to mention, in the "2D" options, the memory is set to my overclocked speed of 775, even when I hit "restore defaults" then go back on the 3D bit and raise it again and apply, it saves it in the 2D bit to - is this normal?

125mhz is below average. most people get to 650mhz on the core :p
mine did 650 on the core but then the card died the standard 79 series death.

how long have you had your card?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have had my card 3 months on the 27th this month. I might try mine on 600 then and see how it is on that - perhaps yours died because you overclocked it to much? ;)

<edit> how old was yours before it died?

Oh :O If a 79 series card is going to die, will it die instantly? - surely not all of them can be duds?

<edit> Just tried my GPU on 585 and it reported that my overclock was to high :( ahwell, 125mhz is better than nothing ;D

Sorry to revive this thread but WTF. I thought I would attempt increasing the clock speeds again as they was apparently low for my card, before I couldnt go above 575/775 but now I have them at 595/795 - is the "test changes" thing in coolbits random or something? (played CNC for a few hours and it seems stable at these clocks too).
