Looking to replace my 9700 Pro which has recently began artifacting soon after running games.

I am going to be moving to PCI-E later on this year, so I don't really want to have to spend a huge amount of money, but it would be great if the card could at least outperform the 9700 Pro I've had for over 2 years.

I've read that the Asus V9999 is the best, featuring a 6800U chip or something, and can sometimes run at 16/6.

Are there any other cards for around the same amount of money, either ATi or nVidia will be fine.

Thanks all :)

for that price i would say that the Leadtek WinFast GeForce 6600 GT 128MB DDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail (GX-050-LT) Price: £84.95 (£99.82 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Hi there

The 6600 GT's are your best bet unless you can get a 6800nu that definetely unlocks....

Will a 6800nu outperform a 6600 GT?

If it will, I'll just pay the extra and take the risk that it will/won't unlock....#

Nothing by ATi around that price or even a little higher?

I believe at stock without modding the 6600 GT is the quicker card, but when the 6800nu it becomes quicker.

Tough call then...

There doesn't seem much info about the 6800nu, so I'd be buying into a relatively unknown product...may still take the risk though.

Nothing else to consider? even if I up the price a little?

For ATI the X700Pro is pitched against the 6600GT.

The next step up would be to the X800XL, X850XT, 6800GT/GS cards which are £70 -£90 more expensive.

Hi there

If you can afford it go for a 6800 GS AGP as the OcUK cards are now only £150 Inc. VAT. :)

I've just ordered the 6600GT to replace a dead 9600XT - hopefully arrive today and I'll see how it compares to the 9600XT if that's any help to you.

I just bought myself an Asus V9999 last week. I did a lot of research and believe that the 6800 at stock will out-perform a 6600GT. I easily unlocked 4 extra pipelines and 1 vertex shader and the card is amazing for the money. I haven't overclocked it as of yet but research says that it can be almost as good as the higher end 6800's.

I highly recommend the V9999.

Check these two threads too.

I agonised over this kind of decision a while ago (back when the 6600GT where just coming out), and I went with a 6800nu. From the research I did back then it seemed to me that at higher (above 1280x1024) resolutions the 6800 cards had slightly better performance (I think back then all the 6600GT had a 128bit memory interface, all 6800nus had a 256bit one). At lower resolutions the 6600GT had about the same perfromance, but was cheaper. Unlocking or overclocker these cards is a gamble, if one does it will likely outperform the other if it doesn't, if they both do the 6800nu will win.

For me, I bought based on the stock specs and what I wanted the card to do, (I try to run above 1280x1024) anything else was a bonus. The 6800nu card I got gives me around 10900 3dMark03 when clocked/unlocked, which is within spitting distance of a 6800GT (with similar kit), so I was happy.

V9999 can be found for about £110(thats with P+P) if you shop about, and there faster at stock, overclock VERY well and also have the chance of unlocking pipelines and vertex shader, oh well 2late now. You might have been able 2 get it running close to GT speeds, but then again you might not of, the 6600GT is solid enough anyway

only if your playing at high res really, i think the asus performs better than reference cards? and im relativly sure i read it had a better chance of pipelines unlocked, vertex shaders unlocking and may have faster memory... I cant raelly see the extra memory being too benneficial on a 6800, id personally take the asus and overclock+unlock it.

How do they sound for a Barton 2500+ @ 220x10, 2x1GB @ DDR440, NF7-S :)

What card did you order mate? I've got the exact same system as you but 1gig of ram, barton 2500@3200 and I can score over 10k in 3dmark 03 with a overclock of 380/810 on a 6800nu - and if I voltmod the gfx via bios and overclock past 400 I reach around 5k in 05 - obviously this is great performance however the card gets crippled in hgih res of 1680X1050 use aa/af because lack of 256mb ram
