I'll cut to the point, off to uni next week and family pc is:

Pentium 4 2.53ghz
1.25gb PC3200 DDR Ram
9600pro 128mb AGP Card

Now when I come back every now and then, I'd like to play the odd game. Whats the best graphics card to compliment this system (max res 1024x768)?I'd like to play the likes of Team Fortress 2, Spore, COD 4 (and 5) etc etc. Don't mind 2nd hand, just don't want something too expensive or too good

you could pair your 2.5 P4 with a 4870x2, it'd still struggle to play TF2 :/

Best bet would be to find something like a 2nd hand 7600GT. Should be quite cheap and shouldn't need a new PSU to power it.

The X1950 would be quicker and better for games but will probably cost more and need a new/descent PSU to power it.

Because it's an old AGP based system, to me it's not worth really spending a whole lot of money on.

What way is your RAM arranged?

2x512mb and 2x128mb?

And like others said, 7800/7900 or x1950. Personally if you have the cash I'd think about building a new system for yourself. £600 + monitor would get you a machine that could max every game out atm. (apart from crysis(as if that needs to be said)).

Thanks for the replies everyone. I did indeed forget to add that I have no intention in changin the power supply, its a useless Packard Bell 250W or something, so I need the fastest AGP card that doesnt need extra power and doesn't cost much. This PC will only be used for games when I come back from uni and leave my pc (a e8400, 4gb ram, 4870 on a 20" widescreen) in halls.

So was looking at the likes of a 2600 pro/xt, or 3650 but I don't know if they need extra juice to run. And out of interest, which 7 series card need extra power (no reason lol)
