AGP card for Windows 7?

Hello, I got a P4 PC they were getting rid of from work and have given it to my father in law. I installed Windows 7 on the machine and it runs really well, very snappy.

One problem though was getting Aero working on the nvidia 5200FX card. I have eventually got it working but it doesn't run well, dragging a window round the screen is sluggish.

I've looked at upgrading his graphics card to a better AGP model but it looks like a minefield finding one that gives true WDDM 1.1 driver support.

Does anyone know of one?

THe only thing I can think of is to get an ATI card (3650 or 4650) and live with Vista WDDM 1.0 drivers, where Aero will work but the main memory usage is higher due to the way these drivers work.

the 3850 AGP and 4650 AGP were the last most powerful AGP cards that will ever be made i suspect. If neither of them do it then you're stuffed.

...except the 4670 AGP, but you might be stuck with this notorious WDDM 1.1 AGP bug in ATi drivers nonetheless.

I must admit i dont know a lot about the bug itself, but I dont think you'll see much, if any real deficit using 1.0. Might end up having to live with it.

I had a 3850 agp with win7 on a p4 a couple of months ago.

The os was fine. I didnt use aero themes though because the system wasnt as fast with them enabled. The whole thing did work without any problems though.

Was given a Geforce 6200 AGP last week, popped it into an old Athlon XP 2200, installed Win 7 and Aero runs fine with it.

Thanks folks, I reckon it's worth spending £30-£40 to get Windows 7 working as it should. The thumbnails of each window as you hover on the taskbar icon are really useful and are not there without aero.

I'll probably go for a 3850, they seem to be cheap and should do the job :)
