Looking to upgrade the graphics department from my trusted 9800. Looking to get an x1950 sapphire. Any point hanging about a bit, until anythnig else is released, or is it best to just go for it now?

My rig:
athlon xp 2800+
1 gb ram

I did exactly what your thinking of doing 3 months ago. They aren't very expensive (not compared with high end PCI-E cards anyway) and it depends when/if you're going to build a new system any time soon.

I got mine as a stop gap between then and Oct when I build my new pc, as with a 9800 my rig wasn't able to run any of the new games I've acquired at a decent level (TDU, C&C3 etc).

I'm not sure if anything faster will be released on AGP any time soon but an 1950 gave my system a nice boost, but its obviously still not that great as everything else is quite old.

I have until later today...athlon xp 3200+. If I was only upgrading my graphics card, then only one I would consider would be the x1950pro. It is THE best deal for the money. I would prob suggest only getting the 256MB one anyway, as your CPU will really limit things anyway, it would be waste of money getting a 512MB.

Also... do not consider the Gecube x1950XT TEC, as you will NEVER get the best from it with your current setup.

You can get the agp 256MB version for around £100 now as well. (Also, the GT version is not as good).

i just checked out specs of the psu, it says the following:

+12v 17a MAX
+5v 35a MAX

+3.3v 20a MAX
-5v 0.5a MAX
-12v 0.5a MAX

will i need another psu for the x1950, or will i need another?
Ta.

Your in a similar position to me mate. Got an Athlon XP 3000 and looking at an AGP VGA card upgrade.

My PSU is rated at 400w with 15.0amps on the +12volt rail.

Because my PSU is not supplying enough amps on the +12volt rail, I can't run the top AGP cards like the ATI X1950 and XFX Geforce 7950GT etc. Looks like the best I can get at the moment without changing the PSU is a Geforce 7600GT.

Your PSU spec's are fairly similar to mine so you could either have a lower spec card like the 7600GT or have the better VGA card and have to upgrade the PSU.

I have read on various sites that ATI will have an AGP version of their new 2400 and 2600 cards soon. Apparently these are fairly low power consumption cards like the Geforce 7600GT and you might not need to upgrade your PSU.

On the contrary, I ran my HIS x1950 Pro just fine with a 400w PSU with 15amps on the 12volt rail. Along with 4 fans, 2 harddrives, 2 optical drives and a few USB devices as well. Also, my PSU was a cheap no-name I got with a case for £20
