agp cards...which one

im upgrading a friends pc who doesnt want to buy a new one.

he has a nvida geforce mx 420

agp 4x

i can only find agp 8x cards? will they work ok?

iirc AGP 8X cards can scale down to run on 4X slots perfectly fine. There are issues with 1X and 2X slots not supporting newer cards though.

That is my understanding too.

The cheapest upgrade & still a HUGE jump up from a mx 420 would be something like the Radeon X1650Pro ....

I'll second that...going from an Mx440 to a Radeon 9700 pro like I did make a tremendous amount of difference.

So if he was to goto a x1650 card the difference would be amazing I think...even if the card did run at x4 as opposed to x8.

Only thing you might want to check is his psu, see if its half decent at least.

Also what motherboard is he running do you know?
