Hi guys,

I was just wondering if there would be any benefit in upgrading my old school 256mb ATI X850XT to one of the newer cards that have come out? (or any that are in the pipeline that i havent heard about for that matter)

would i notice significant performance increases in the games i play frequently at the moment like battlefield 2 and everquest 2?

i know that you might suggest i move over to pci express but i dont particularly want to get shafted on decent mobo and ram prices at what they are now (and yeah i know agp cards have a slight premium but 1 premium is better than 2 :P). i do plan on upgrading a bit further down the line (might still be a while though) as my athlon xp3000+ is getting throttled in eq2 but just waiting for some reasonable prices on the hardware i previously mentioned

apologies if this has been elsewhere but i couldnt find anything specific....

Cheers

What 3D mark 05 score do you currently get and what settings do you run BF2 at.

argh i did these benchies not so long ago but had to reformat in between now and then - i really cant remember the scores i was getting :(

i run bf2 at 1024x768 with most stuff on high but i think i turned off some shadows and lighting to get a bit better fps

Don't upgrade your GFX yet, its probs getting slighlty bottlenecked as it is atm with your 3000XP. Save your money for when you can afford to upgrade everything, OR if you sell your old bits they will easily cover for you to swap to 939.

I have that cpu lol, also don't swap to 939 it would be like swaping from one 'old' technology to a slightly less outdated one. To be honest your current graphics card is good. How much ram do you have? BF2 really wants 2 gig for highest everything.

ive just noticed that a 512mb version of the x1950 is available to pre-order and that really does look tempting (for bf2142 and any other newish games coming out)......

would any of my current system specs mean any serious bottlenecking?

i have decided that i am not really interested in changing to any new sockets just now as im going to have exams over jan and then be busy with stuff after jan so wont have time to look around and then put everything together

i have a 19" samsung 930BF and run windows at 1280x1024. however i cant seem to run that res in games without quite a bit of lag

TBH, I think there is somethin up with your card as it should be able to own that resolution with everythin maxed. My friend runs a 20.1 " viewsonic with native res and full settings in bf2 etc on his 6800gs.

hmmph :(

could it be related my power supply then? i havent changed it since i got this thing. i think its 380W

I've got a X800 XT PE and that just about runs BF2 with max settings at 1280 x 1024

The odd slow down here and there, but it's playable.

What motherboard do you have? Running the 3000XP at default clocks? Tried clocking the X850 at all?

i have an abit nf7-s and i tried overclocking a while back and was getting quite a few system crashes afterwards (not sure whether thats just being a noob and overclocking badly though :P)

as for the x850, no i havent tried overclocking it after the past experiences. i was cheekily thinking about sending it back to where i bought it and having them send me a replacement (ie an x1950 pro) because these cards arent made anymore lol
