Hi there,

I was wondering if there are any AGP cards that can run folding? I am looking at a new card but I want one to be able to run it else I will have to upgrade my motherboard to a PCI-E one and get a card to go with it costing a lot more.

thanks

Hey

the x2 is indeed 939...I will definitely be going with that DFi board - have read nothing but good things about it.

wish I had enough posts to view the members market but currently you need 250 - will have to get spamming me thinks.

I cant seem to find an X1950 pro AGP anywhere tbh... I thought the top AGP card by ATi is the X1600?

Is there a lot of speed difference between the pro and XT? or just a few mhz either side?

OcUK have the AGP X1950 PRO in stock now but it's actually over £200 currently which is a serious chunk of money compared to the PCI-E equivalent :o

edit: It's also only 256MB currently which wouldn't be the best choice given that F@H WUs only seem to get larger with time, 512MB X1950PRO AGP cards are expected in February next year but no doubt those will be highly priced too

Aw, come on. It's supposed to work with any X1xxx series card now, though of course the lower numbered cards will be slower.

/still has an X1800 but I'm not sure if/when it'll go on - points wise I'm not sure if it's worth it.

/is also looking for a how to guide. Hint. ;)

If we get another load of rubbishy CPU WUs then it'll definately be worth a try, with the current WUs and the right kind of rig (read C2D) it's not worth it even with the top of the range card :o

hang on - Mr B are you now complaining that the GPU units points are too low? :D

I have a 939 DFI Ultra-D and I can confirm it is great. Overclocked my 4400+ to 2.6GHz no problem. It would go a lot higher too, but I think my chip is a bit pants.

Hurry up and get your 250 posts as I will be flogging my Ultra-D in a few weeks or so!

Send me an email here [email protected] if you are interested, I can give you a heads up if/when it goes into the MM.

Tried my X1800XT 256mb and tbh it was really not worth it. :(

Fan noise drove me mad and the pc became almost unusable (slow redraw on desktop).

Back to both C2D cores folding away nicely.

Did make me realise how overclockable these cards are though. 650 core and 760 on mem with no probs. Did get to 94c after a reboot and the fan stayed off though!

You can reduce the wierdness by turning off some of the visual effects in windows such as menu animation and fading effects etc - even my X1950XT with 512MB gets a bit laggy at times though I've heard the 256MB cards really suffer :o

oh and the fan noise - yep it's silly :p

yep, you'd have to be crazy to Fold on a the stock cooler IMHO. i put an X2 accelorator on mine, great value, and quiet at 100%
mine's quite annoying on the stock cooler even at only 50% - though it's running in the living room which for 90% of the time has just me and nobody has to sleep next to this beast :p

If I'm planning on watching a quiet movie I do tend to switch back to 2 CPU clients and set the 2D profile for the GPU - quietens right down after the heat has dispersed :)

Im traveling at the moment, but I have 2 x1950 Pro's going with a third to be fired up upon my return to San Jose. There running about 7 to 7.5 minuts per step compared to 5.5 minutes per step on the X1950XTX, and of course the XTX is almost double in price. I'll be interested to see if there's a vast difference between the AGP version and the x pro version.

Either way, I dont think one could go wrong buying the Pro if they can get a descent price.
.

...and the AGP card drops back below £180 once more but is out of stock again - just gonna keep watching it and in the meantime keep sending out those job applications :p

edit: down to £170 now - still on pre-order for the next batch of stock
