Please could you advise me.
I have an Asus K8V-X mobo with an athlon 64 3000 and a 9700pro.
Is there an AGP card that would "DEFINATELY" show an improvement over what I have now. Or would it be better to update all three? and if so what would you suggest (on budget of say 400-500 pounds) For games mainly.
Thanks for any help offered. (except `buy a games console) :)

K.

You could upgrade your graphics card to the following

BFG GeForce 7800 GS OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) - Retail £223.

This would give you a significant increase in performance over your current card. BUT you are not getting much for your money when compared to PCI-E.

Is your Athlon 64 Socket 939??

GX-121-SP Sapphire ATI Radeon X1800 XT 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-121-SP) 1
£184.95 £184.95
MB-014-DF DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-014-DF) 1
£79.95 £79.95
CP-150-AM AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 90nm (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-150-AM) 1
£119.95 £119.95
FG-000-AR Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940) (FG-000-AR) 1
£12.95 £12.95
Subtotal £397.80

Total £467.42

Or if you want to stay AGP perhaps an x850xt for £200 inc Vat or the 7800GS for £223 inc VAT. Personally i'd upgrade to PCI-e, but thats me :p
You could perhaps get around £130+ for the parts you have bringing it down to an outlay of around £350ish for what amounts to a new system.

Don't bother with a 7800GS, just buy a cheap second hand 6800GT on here for abour £130. The 7800gs shows a very small increase over the 6800GT's at ultra speeds. £70 saving :D

I think this is you best bet, as you can see for only double the price you get a much, much faster graphics card, update to PCIE mobo, get a faster CPU & with tha cooler should get some great overclocks too.

Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated.

(oh the cpu is 754)

For a Socket 939 Athlon 64:

GX-048-PC PowerColor ATI Radeon X1800 XT 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-048-PC)

if you got a socket 939cpu then its best to change your board to pci-e, but for users like me who have a old XP cpu that still has some life in it the only option is to get a 7800GS since there is no board available for socket A systems that has a pci-e slot.
