AGP upgrading issues and question

I recently purchased a HIS x1650 pro (AGP) to replace my aging 9700 pro to be used with a Socket A, Gigabyte GA-7VAXP-A Ultra.
I have had two of these cards now (first one replaced for another by OcUK) but they both have given my the same issues.

Issues are when using 2d and normal non 3d applications i get an error message stating that the vpu is not recieving commands and therfore the graphics accelerator has been disabled. This leads to the monitor going blank soon after and then windows crashing. When running 3d games there is no warning just a system reboot as it crashes.
I get the feeling it is an incompatibility between my motherboard and the graphics card. I have tried catalyst drivers 6.4 to 6.10 and no luck as the 9700 pro runs fine and i can't belive that the HIS card is overheating.

I am now tempted to change to a 7600GT but want to ask if the Leadtek is worth bying with 256 memory of is it better to get a card with 512 memoery??
Also does anyone know of any incompatibilty issues with 7600GT and socket A motherboards?

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thank you.

I'm afraid that I don't know of any issues with the X1650pro so I can't help there but the 7600gt should be absolutely fine provided your PSU is up to powering it. I'd only go for the 256mb version, you are highly unlikely to see any benefit with 512mb and your system is probably also too old to take advantage anyway. :)

Thanks for the help.
I have tried googling the messages and come up with most saying it may be a temperature issue. Seems strange that the HIS would have the issue and not the 9700 pro.
The power supply i have is a Tagen 500w so i think it should have enough power.
I would try running ATItools on it to check temps etc but as it crashes the machine am not sure i would get any luck.

Thank you for the recommendation about the 7600gt. :)

As already said 512MB is wasted on an X1650 / X1600 / 7600 series card (they just aren't fast enough to make use of that amount of memory) and a 7600 GT would be quite a lot faster than an X1650 Pro.

It seems unlikely heat is the issue when your 9700 Pro encountered none, especially with the pretty impressive coolers on HIS cards and your PSU if a Tagan should have no problem with that card.

What is the rest of your rig and the OS? You have all the service packs, DX updates, mobo drivers etc?

The BIOS is up to date.
I initally tried with an older BIOS and that was worse but even the newest BIOS has issues.
OS is Windows XP pro and has all patches and updates.
Looks like i am heading for the 7600GT.
Thanks all. :)

Sorry for reserecting but any recommendations on the 7600gt card?
Is the Leadtek any good and quiet or are there better cards (manufacturers) to go for.

Thanks

I'd just go for whatever card is cheapest, there is very little difference between the cards, generally it comes down to the cooler or the bundle as other than the price because they are basically all built to a standard reference design.
