Just tried this on my internal sata drives (7 of them), and it managed to turn all of them off. I didn't bother taking the power cables/sata off the drives, I just used the app again to re-detect them again. All drives came back, and only one was troublesome. (slow listing folders)

I'm hoping to test further today, if my external e-sata comes, to make sure I can add and remove without issue's in windows xp.

Been using that for a while. It's a very useful peice of software, especially if you have a board like my old Asus one which didn't detect eSATA devices very well, the ability to scan for new hardware from a single click was great.

rpstewart recommended it to me ages ago and been using it for a while. My asus board also doesn't seem to detect esata devices to well - ruddy jmicron controller!

I've tried updating the bios - but nothing appears to detect it. I have also tried stripping down the cable but that doesn't do anything either.

It's a very bizarre problem (should add that it's with Silicon Image not jmicron), but the problem is the same..
