On my motherboard there is and option to set it as IDE, AHCI or RAID. I'm presently using IDE but I read that using AHCI will give better performance on my SATAII hard drives but there are also other that say it will cause problems with SATA optical drives.

Any insight on this?

I switched it on as it allows me to use hot swapping as well as SATA features such as NCQ and it hasn't caused any problems with my DVD writer. If I remember correctly though if you installed with the controller in IDE mode you need to set something in Windows so it is in AHCI mode before switching the controller to it or Windows will not boot.

better performance with AHCi, you could change to AHCI without needed to do fresh install. just google it.

Always best to fresh install if you want to use AHCI although the hassle changing for perhaps 1 - 2% performance increase is hardly worth it.

Just go RAID 0 if your worried about performance.

The difference between AHCI and IDE you will never notice.
