I enabled AHCI in BIOS, then loaded Vista 64 (new system, so clean load, not an upgrade).

Is there anything else I need to do? Do I need to load any drivers? If so, which and is it too late? The machine seems to be working OK.

How can I check it is correctly configured / working?

Could this be why Vista can't partition my 640GB HDD to have a C: partition of less than about 290GB? Regardless of the cause, any suggestions on how to make the C: partition smaller? If not, I'm going to try to make it as small as it will let me, then see if I can partition it again. If that doesn't work, I'll try Partition Magic or similar.

Answers / thoughts on any of the above will be much appreciated!

3 hours and no-one has any thoughts on this at all.

Have I asked something particularly difficult... or is Friday afternoon just not a good time :p

Can anyone help?

Thanks

AHCI should be natively supported in Vista unless you have a particularly exotic controller. It's XP that has problems with AHCI.

As for partitioning, never had trouble setting up drives in Vista, but then when I'm doing a 'proper' install I tend to partition drives manually using a Linux Live CD, because Windows often seems to do something dumb (at least dumb in my view).

vista had ahci issue for me on a p35 chipset, need to install vista with ahci enabled at first otherwise the ahci drive wont be loaded up and then when you change to achi mode after the install vista wont boot up. easy to fix though if you have 2 seperate sata controllers on ya mobo.

as for partitioning good like changing your c drive with vista already on it. vista disk management wont allow you to pratt around with the partition size of your partition which houses the os.

Last I knew there's no benefit for having ahci enabled best to keep it ide.

As for partitions on the C drive I'd only bother if you are using the other partitions for data and working/deleting on
ideally should just have C for games apps and separate drives for everything else.

Have tried making a partition for windows on C many times and it makes no difference at all that anyone would notice.

Fortunately, this is what I did.

Well, it seems willing to let me make it smaller, but not as small as I want to make it! I realise it won't then let me make it bigger again.

Only one SATA drive and at 640 GB, more than I'll need for OS & apps alone.

So, partitioning to use rest for data etc.

Also, makes everything neat and easy to find, back up etc etc. I suppose I could use mapped drives, but it's not quite the same.

Vista disk management only allows you to shrink disks up to the end of existing active data. Shrink, reboot, defragment, reboot, shrink, reboot, ... might help, but I doubt it.

Thanks for the suggestion.

What about a 3rd party application - Partition Magic or similar? Would that work better?

Thanks - I think!

Just had a quick look at this, but not really got a clue what they're on about! Is it some sort of Linux utility?

As I've only loaded Vista and drivers so far, I think it might just be easier to start again...

So...

What's the best way to reformat the drive?

How / when can I partition it - I didn't seem to get an option when installing 1st time round - unless I missed it.

Thanks

EDIT> Going to ask this in a new thread as it doesn't really relate to original subject
