AI file into photoshop

Hi

I'm just curious why it takes my PC about 10 minutes to open a 300dpi 1M x 1.5M Ai file.

OK it's a bit rich (dpi) and large, but it's a 2500k machine with 8GB ram and a HD7850 graphics card.

Is there something wrong with my setup or is this inherently down to the way adobe imports files and nothing can be done about it?

How large is the file itself bytes wise? What sort of internal drive are you using? Loading up the file will depend more on if the file is stored on a slow or fast hard drive/SSD.

It's most likely because it's an AI file and hence chock full of vector information, and while Photoshop can interpret this, it is still primarily a raster programme.

As has been asked what is the file size?

May I also ask why you're opening it in Photoshop rather than Illustrator?

Because you're not simply "opening" an AI file with photoshop.

What you're doing is "rendering" it in photoshop.

This obviously depends on the complexity of the illustration. A 1m² square with several vectors is going to be rendered in milliseconds. A 1m² with hundereds and thousands of vectors is going to take a lot of processing power.

need to make a tiff file out of AI file to send to the printers. AI wont do it because it hits its "max memory allocation".

Its not the file size that's the issue, it's no more than 80MB

300dpi 1M x 1.5M... if those numbers are 1 metre by 1.5 metres then you're opening a 210 mega pixel image, that will make pretty much any system struggle.

The 80MB AI file will not be 80MB when it's opened up, you're likely using AI's compression to make smaller file sizes. RAM usage will be high and you're likely using page file to work on a large file like that so that all slows it down.

Yep, rendering a tiff at that size will cause Photoshop to sweat.

haha what kind of printers don't accept vector format?

Yep, sounds odd to me too, any printer I use would be delighted to have a vector file! :)
