Sons been looking and decided he wants to buy a nzxt kraken with some of his crimbo money,
I got him a 5600x which I’m going to put in for him on crimbo eve to replace his old cpu
Question I’ve got is is the kraken worth the money ?
Or is there any other options around same price or less
Annoying but at the moment his cooler master 212 black will be perfect for the cpu upgrade
But my sons 14 going on 20 and having rgb is like cocaine to a addict and some adults

I did have a look at Corsair but since my first build I’ve now always gone for air, hence the 212
Thanks

Spend some on the most baller LL120 RGB fan to replace the fan on the 212 Black you currently have.

Hyper 212 Black is fine. If you have to get an AIO, I’d say the Arctic Freezer II - 280 mm is great value for money but it’s not got RGB.

haha His already got four coolermaster mf120 halo fans in the build which i put in a good while back.
Surprised he ain’t got a suntan how bright it is and the amount he grinds gaming on it.

You say it's what your son wants. He'll not be after performance per £ or anything like that - he'll probably want it specifically for the display that's on the CPU block.

If that part is indeed why he wants it, then I doubt he'd be as happy with other choices, even if they are better coolers.

Agree with above... He wants the Kraken for the looks. His Crimbo money, his choice...just had same conversation with my son over xbox elite controller at 3 times price of normal, but it's what he wants....I know the X73 kraken had £60 off black fri week...may be worth waiting till Jan sales see if some come back on offer

What’s the largest radiator his chassis can fit? Don’t get a 360 mm rad if you can’t install it.

Hahaha mate sounds like my boy before he realised pc was the way forward for gaming!
Just don’t tell your son about the Astro c40 or the cronus zen otherwise your pocket is gonna take a beating

This is the problem I can fit a 240mm in the top but where I was thinking of putting the 360mm in the front I would have to place it upside down probably making it more noisy due to the pump being up the top.
Unsure if the length of the tube would reach over his gpu, if I had it the correct way up in the front.

As long as you mount the rad so that the tiny amount of air in the AIO isnt in the pump during operation, you’ll be fine.

gamers nexus did a whole video on just that issue - if air is trapped in the pump, it wears it out pretty quickly.

I don’t think that a 360mm rad is necessary. Stick to 240mm or 280mm.

Unfortunately his b'day was 2 weeks ago(just turned 15)...now he's on my pc wanting to play apex to try out a keyboard and mouse as his next present (glad we got the elite controller then)...and VR...it never ends...next year is a pc apparently...he's giving me fair warning to start saving now :cry:
what case is tha aio going in?

Well had a result today,
collected a z63 kraken brand new sealed in the box off , (cash on collection)
For £135
cheaper then 185 off Amazon anyways.
Case wise it will fit in the top but I’m probably gonna buy a new case for him as we had a jig around and his case is my old case the p35
Nice case but want something which ain’t like a dust magnet, wouldn’t mind but it’s not even on the floor it’s on his desk!
Now gotta fork out on a set of coolermaster halo 140mm to swap out for the rad as his already got halo 120s in his build.

Yeah I see that video as I’m subbed to him, like his content.
When I done my first build I had a Corsair aio and took me a while to figure this simple thing out switched it around and it was pretty quiet after

if you want to buy from a shop, it's £150 on offer if you look...ignore, re read and seen you've already picked it up...I'd be a little careful mentioning competitor names, it's against the rules. I've said rainforest once and had message deleted

My bad should known better been joined since 2013
Couldn’t really find it for that price anywhere, well not in my should I buy from this dodgey site that sells it for a too good to be true price!
Now searching for a case something that’s got a clear side panel and not tinted like his too show it off?

Just get him some Christmas fairylights and wrap them around the 212 :cry::cry:

Jokes aside, get some extra RGB case fans, if you have to, but a good air cooler will easily be up to the task of an overclocked 5600X. It's the sensible choice for reliable cooling on a moderately overclocked gaming rig. Water cooling has it's place - I still use AIOs on small cases where space is constrained and have used AIO's and custom loops in the past for really extreme overclocking, but other than those two use-cases, I can't justify the reliability and maintenance of water cooling.

I had a 240mm Corsair Hydro H115i which had to be RMA'd after 3 months (main pump failure)... even paying for the "express" RMA with Corsair took three months.... then it was awesome for 12 months: looked the business, menacing LED's and the initial performance was phenomenal..... then I realised the performance had dropped to the same as the stock AMD Wraith cooler... I had the option of a messy/risky refill of the AIO or replace it.... did my homework and now running a Noctua NH-D15. I only run the Ryzen Master overclock - nothing extreme and no long CPU-intensive rendering and video compression (GPU is far better for that!), just lots of workstation and gaming. Fairy lights remain an option.

You're cooling a 5600x (a 65w CPU), you don't even need an AIO for cooling purposes let alone going all the way up to a 360mm.

I know, 100% agreed.... I think he's just after a mounting point / excuse for RGB (kids! **sigh**).... hence my recommendation for the RGB fans and don't mess with the cooling... why make it less reliable, if you don't have to...

Plus when he realises that he needs to switch OFF the veritable Christmas tree on the desk in his bedroom, because something is running overnight.... he has some options.... not to mention ripping it all out fairly easily when he gets bored of it or wants a change in style.
