I did have a netgear wireless router and an airport express.
I got it to work by adding it to my existing network for airtunes use.

Well that's exactly what I've been trying to do, and failing.
Even Apple said it probably wouldn't work.

But you're saying it has? So I need to find out how if poss?

No secret.
I had a Netgear router connected to my cable modem.
The network was secured using WPA and broadcasting the SSID.
I plugged the express in and used airport utility to scan for it and configure using the wizard. Gave it a name and a password, clicked continue.
Selected 'I have a wireless network and want to add airport express or replace an existing device on my network' then clicked continue.
Selected 'I want airport express to join my current network' and hit continue.
Selected 'Join my wireless network' then clicked continue.
Plugged in all the details of my existing network then clicked continue.
Clicked update and waited for the express to restart.
Light flashed amber then solid green.

Well that sounds just like what I've done.

Which router is yours? Is it a DG834?

Appreciate the help. Feels like money spent on the AE is wasted at mo.
