Not sure if this is the right forum so please move if required.

My PC runs quite quietly but produces a lot of heat, has anyone put an air con unit in a loft to take outside air in and exhaust cooled air into an upstairs room?
If so did it work?
Andi.

You mean like normal air-conditioning :p

Well it will make the ambient temperature of the room cooler for sure which in turn will lower the temps of your pc.... But only by a few degrees. But it also depends...

When you say it produces a lot of heat. Do you mean the temps of components get pretty toasty or the room becomes a sweat box like a small bedroom/airing cupboard?

It would probably be a lot more cost effective to upgrade your pc cooling gear, maybe some better fans capable of pushing more air around with a small increase in noise.

All depends what cooling gear you currently have too.

It would be expensive to run like that as it would have to be on full blast all the time, portable aircon units recirculate the air in the room cooling and also removing moisture which helps you feel more comfortable as your body can cool itself a lot more effectively in dry air through sweating and probably even your breathing.

I might be wrong but thats how ive always understood it works. If you blast cold air in from the outside then you would need to open a window or something to let air out and you would just have to keep the unit going all the time.

Its not a very cheap option running aircon to cool the air produced from the PC, i did it for many years and the extra electric on the bill is crazy, you would be better off water cooling and just putting the radiator either outside or into the room you want the warm air to go. That would take most the heat out of the room.

Yeah so long as you mount the rad in another room or outside, the heat has to get out of the room somehow. I would probably add a bit of antifreeze to the water though, wouldnt want it freezing up in winter. a lot of us used DI water an anti freeze back in the early days, i dont remember any ill effects from it, was a long time ago though :)
