Folks,

Just got an i7 920. Damn these things run hot even at standard on the original hsf. Currently idles at around 40-45, and max sees it hitting 70-75, so no chance of overclocking it yet. This is a big step up in temps from a Q6600 with a Tuniq that struggled to get over 45 at 3.8.

Looking to get a better cooler, but what is the recommendation (other than going h2o)?

I've got a Noctua U12P (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-005-NC&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=821) on order, but I'm not sure if I should save a few pennies and get a Thermalright Ultra or True and the adaptor bracket.

Any thoughts on which would best get the max out of this chip?

Thanks

exactly the same temp as mine
stock hsf p182 case
if you have evga x58 I would pick TRUE 1366
otherwise noctua

oh god! THAT hot! and here i was waiting to OC my 920! are there any i7 specific HSF's appearing around?

There's not many, which is what's giving me the problem. Do I splash out on a new HSF, or get a 775 one and replacement mount (if available). I really like my Tuniq Tower, but they don't plan on making a mount for the i7 separately :(

Think I'm going with the Noctua linked above

I use a cheap Akasa Nero and it's loads better than the Stock HSF. The cores are ~57 at near full load right now (crunching seti@home units on 7 cores) BUT I needed to add an extra 120mm fan in the side of the case to keep the chipset cool (and it cools the CPU a bit more too). I'm thinking of putting another 120mm in the top of the case as it doesn't have one at the moment.

You've got the exact same issue I will have next week. I'm currently waiting on my 920 to arrive, but having just sold of my Q6600 which I had with my tuniq i dont know what to do. The tuniq tower was just outstanding comp never went above 40C fully loaded. Amazing thing, i really wanted to continue using my tuniq but it looks like i'm gonna have to sell unless they make an adaptor.

Does anyone know if this might happen at all. If not what will fit easily on a asus P6T Deluxe. Maybe an email to tuniq asking them to produce an adaptor. Unless there planning on releasing a 1366 specific cooler.

I have the thermalright ultra 120 extreme with their 1366 bolt thu kit, it fits well with the p6t DeLuxe although its big, there is still enough space to fit a fan on the motherboard chipet cooler. I think just about any 1366 cooler will fit the p6t.

I sent an email to them this morning asking if Tuniq would be making an adaptor and praising the Tower. Fingers crossed I'll get a response soon, so I can cancel my order if not needed

I have the noctua, it does the job, though i will put some AC MX-2 on it soon as i think i can get temps lower, when overclocked to 3.8 i have mid 40's on idle and load of about high 50's, though it depends on application.

Go for the Noctua. Worth the money all £58 of it!! I have one on my EX58-UD5 with an I7-965 and it keeps it around 34-36C idle & 70ish under a 3.75 Ghz overclock. I7s all seem to run very toasty so you need either water or a high end air HSF otherwise forget any ocing. The stock HSF on the 965 is a slightly better one than the 920/940 model but even then it cannot handle a 133Mhz overclock and be stable for long as its marginal.

However, makes sure your case can accomodate as I had to lose my lefthand side case fan as the Noctua is tall so only perhaps 3-4CM from the case panel is left which is not enough for a case fan as well.

The actual IHS on the S1366 CPU is quite a bit bigger than on a S775 CPU so until the new S1366 specific coolers come out, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on one.

In many ways temperatures are irrelevant, as long as you don't exceed the manufacturer's limits, why not?

A Honda Civic diesel redlines at about 4750RPM, while the equivalent V-Tec Type-R engine redlines at almost 9000RPM. What you're doing is saying to yourself, I've always had diesels before, I'll only use 4000RPM because that's safe. And you won't see the maximum performance. Do yourself a favour, wring a little performance from your i920;)
