Hi all

I am upgrading my pc with the Q6700. I wanted to get a new air cooler. At the moment i have a Sythe Ninja. What would be the best Air Cooler to keep this cpu cool while overclocking a little. I had looked at the Tuniq Tower. Are there better Coolers than this? Help appreciated.

c.

The tuniq is a good cooler and will do well on a reasonable overclock... the best air cooler currently however is the thermalright ultra 120

the two I have gotten recently have been ok on the bases.. certainly didnt have to lap them.. only did because I wanted the extra performance... thermalright is better than the tuniq so dont worry :)

BTW Did you lap the CPU until you had a mirrored surface on the copper inside : ?

Is the lapping something you need to redo sometimes or is it a one timer ?

It should be a one timer as all you are doing is making the surface completely flat, thats the aim, not to make it shiny and keep re-doing it... I got myself a thermaltake big typ 120 from here, dropped my idle temps around 15C across all 4 cores so impressed with that so far

Was more wondering if the copper would oxydate over years when the nickel is removed : )

15C ??? is that even possible :?

at 100% fan speed I idle at around +1/2c above ambient (have speedstep on so idle is 2.55Ghz)

The copper itself should get covered by a thin layer of thermal paste so I dout it will oxidize, probably would if you left it uncovered for any length of time

I lapped until it was even and I could see my reflection in the CPU but I didnt polish or buff the surface so wasnt like a perfect mirror... The CPU being flat is far more important temp wise than it being like an expensive pocket mirror :)

Well maybe years... but in years you will have newer hardware I would have thought. Well my Q6600 go @ 3ghz was running at 50 45 50 50 idle on the intel stock cooler, and now it idles at 35 28 35 35 with the new cooler.

Oh ok I thought you earned 15C by just lapping :)
I ll prolly try to lap, I am fine with modding/overclocking as long as I can run it for 3/4 years ... After 2 years I tend to use my stuff in Linux boxes as file servers or just to play music/movies once refitted in a smaller box

Im running a tuniq tower, just order a true again to see what kind of difference it makes. Probably be another diy lap it yourself job though.

Thats what the base of my Ultra-120 Vanilla looked like when I started lapping it, it took a good few mins of gentle lapping until I started getting to the copper in the centre, proper concave!

Well worth doing however as it dropped my load temps quite a bit! (also used a small washer to help the heatsink fit a bit tighter).

I've used Thermalright heatsinks for a few years and the quality has always been top notch so I am a little suprised that some heatsink bases are like this?

The bases become distorted when they attach the heatpipes (or so I have read) you would have thought for what you are paying they could employ some quality control :)

But tbh would have lapped mine anyways may as well go 100% all out on an overclock and get the most for your money!

Btw Pneumonic where did you order the stuff to lap your proc ?
Your experience convinced me to give it a go : )

also, maybe take a look at the Noctua NH-U12F, its baseplate is engineered with grooves, doesn't need lapping. can't say the same for your cpu though.
