hey all, im making a lil inexpensive air extractor to remove bad odurs and trying slow down damp in the window area (was told this will help) and was wondering if a carbon filter will be worth it?

does anyone know how much of a difference a carbon filter will aid in the life of the fan and prevention of pipe blockage?

if this doesnt make much sense im sorry il post some pics and specs of the parts being used if it will help.

thanks

if you're going for just plain extraction then theres no point, just put a dust filter in.

edit; thats a bit vague, if you are just looking to dump air outside then put in a dust filter before the motor, for obvious reasons.

the pipe will be a washing machine waste pipe. not sure what diameter it is but looks to be a little over an inch in diam? standard fiiting i assume.

the fan will be a 12cm case fan which will prob have a 80>120mm fan converter used in reverse to improve suction.

hope this helps.

i was just intrested to know as it will mainly be used by smokers in my room to vent out the air and i was told the carbon and other gunk will stick to the pipes and stuff.

I would say there are two problems here.

1) condensation
2) odours

The easiest solution to these problems is increased ventilation - open the window!

If this is not possible, for the former I would advise a dehumidifier.

The latter can be improved, as you mention, through an extractor.

There is no point in a carbon filter if the air is just being extracted. Are you limited to an existing pipe to hook into? If not a standard bathroom type extractor fan (4 inch diameter iirc) would work far better than a pc fan. In fact a standard pc fan would be overpowered by even a light opposing breeze.

I suppose if all you want is a covert bedroom dope extractor a delta fan and length drain pipe would suffice.

lol at the last part.

no the pipe is not fixed in anyway will be making everything from scratch.

condensation shouldnt be a problem now as it wont be in the window and having the window slightly open solves that hehe
