Hey people... My little fiesta doesnt seem to be giving me very good MPG despite being a small engine..

The Air Filters havent been changed in the way (standard Fiesta filter).
I was wondering would fitting an aftermarket filter give better MPG or would just replacing the standard filter be good enough?

Also I heard that changing the spark plugs will help... how often do you think they should be changed? and how much is it likely to cost?

Thanks Very Much

whats it like compared to other reported MPG for the same car?
whats your driving like? if you drive like a **** all the time you are in the car then your economy will be comparatively poor regardless of what you drive :p

drive sensibly keeping revs low. Not sure what it is exactly but all my mates seem to fill up a lot less then I do and i drive less miles...some have the same car.. some have different cars with varying sizes in engines..

my dad did say he thought that the car was using a bit more fuel then usual and hes been driving it for its 11 year life.

I pumped the tyres and that help a bit

Standard filter is much better than any aftermarket filter in your application (or most, for that matter).

If you're uncertain of basic service consumables like that then I'd advise giving the car a comprehensive service - all fluids, ignition consumables, filters (including fuel and oil) and so on, to give it a chance.

If you don't know, then assume it's not been done.

If you didn't, find out what the tire pressures are supposed to be and check them on a gauge and set them to the right levels :)

If you don't keep your car serviced, ie changing filters (fuel & air), oil, spark plugs and carburettor settings then yes, expect MPG to be less than it should be.

Calculate your MPG properly and find out if it really is bad.

ok I will look through all the garage reciepts that I have to see check when it was last done...

Roughly how long ago do you think Air Filters and Spark Plugs should be changed?

Most cars are different but for the avg car isn't it between 15k and 30k or every 3yrs whichever comes first ?

ok thanks very much... My dad knows for a fact that he hasnt had them done in the last 4 years so I will look into how much it will cost..

Hopefully not tooo much

Thanks for every ones input

You can change the air filter yourself, filters are cheap, just buy a genuine one for your car online and change when it arrives :)

Standard, replaced in often intervals will do a better job than 'performance' filters in most applications. A damn sight cheaper too.

Spark plugs are very cheap and easy to fit, you are looking at a tenner.

Slightly OT, but how difficult is it to change a fuel filter? is there a risk of fuel going everywhere?

Aslong as you clamp both lines at either end of the filter you'll only get the fuel out of the filter itself. Which is very little.

Easy to change, can alter the feel of a car too if it's old/partially blocked.
