Airbag removed - MOT failure?

Hi all,

Quick question, if a cars had an airbag removed is it an instant MOT fail? I rang a car dealer to enquire about a car today and he mentioned it and when I asked he said it's not as there's not a warning light, is that true?

Also should I consider a car without one? FYI it's a 2004 1.6 focus.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like a fail. I've replaced an airbag or two on Fords and they're really easy. Although you really want to be asking why is the airbag removed?

No, find another 1.6 focus ( of which there will be many) that still has it's airbag correctly installed.

Ha, you'd think wouldn't you.. But my GF's requirements are quite strict such as the colour for example lol and is on a low budget.

Thanks for the responses.

If the car is for you, ignore her requirements. On a low budget colour isn't important, service history and mechanical health are.

"Lol we had a crash with no airbags, but it's ok because it was the right colour!"
No. :p

Out of interest, how would that affect track cars and such with aftermarket steering wheels?

As long as the airbag light lights up correctly and then turns out then the mot tester is unlikely to instigate further. I know with some cars a simple resister mod can fool the car into thinking an airbag is present.

Do you not think it's more important that it's not had a crash that's disabled mandatory safety equipment than whether it's the right colour?

That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard all week. Why would anyone sell a car even remotely worth buying without an airbag installed?

Does she not realise how shoddy that sounds?

Of course I do, but its not for me, its for my GF, I cba trying to reason with her anymore, we had a massive argument a month ago because I recommended £62 tyres as the worse/cheapest I'd get and she wanted £30 tyres of some make I'd never heard.. she's only looking for a new car because despite me telling her not to drive through any remotely deep water she did, got stuck, revved the engine like crazy and blew the engine.

I think in this case it would be a fail yes. I changed my wheel entirely for one without airbag, removed the airbag light and passed without issue.

airbags are usually there for a reason, i know i'd want one in a crash, but if your girlfriend prioritizes colour over safety, then go for it...

How about asking the dealer to put an original steering wheel on, with airbag (a new one) as part of the deal?

I had an ex like that... in the end I took her off my insurance and she got her own car and destroyed it within a few years!
