My parents had a similar issue, Vauxhall wanted around £400, dad bought one from the web and we installed it, fairly easy on the Vectra, only annoying thing was getting one of the threaded bolts out of the old condenser and had to make sure the shoulder was level with the bolt hole to get it to seal.

Condenser on mine was replaced at around £200 at a local garage, although mine is a MK2 Focus so maybe cheaper in general.
Hence he won't pay £400 to get it done? Thats how I read it anyway
He implies that his AC remains in a broken state as he is not willing to pay 400 to repair it. A whole Mk1 Focus can almost be bought for this amount, let alone just the AC condenser
