Ive decided to rebuild my system this coming September. I will be getting mostly new parts to replace the aging machine I got 2 and a half years ago.

What I've got:
  • A64 3200
  • 1Gb RAM
  • MSI Neo mobo
  • ATI 9800pro
  • 3 samsung spinpoints (2 in raid + 1 seperate) = 480Gb
  • Dell 2001FP 20 inch tft
  • Coolermaster Black Window - age old fantastic case

I will be keeping the case if at all possible and keyboard/mouse, speakers etc I already have. I was thinking of getting the following new components:

  • New CPU (probably going to be AMD again)
  • 1 or 2 Gb memory should be enough?
  • good graphics card to last a while (or 2)
  • more HDDs! quite(ish) (maybe a couple of 500Gigs will be cheaper then)
  • New mobo
  • new heatsink/cooling solution
  • new PSU

Ill decide on the specifics nearer the time. Depending on the released hardware my upgrade may be later in the year.

Budget will be about £1000 or so. Also I am thinking about a new TFT (an additional cost outwith my current budget of £1000), howver there is nothing at the moment that I want to spend on. A nice 30inch would be cool but the panel itself is not that great...so I might wait on that front.

What about network storage solutions? Never had one of these, do they have gigabit ethernet interfaces or just 100Mb? I was thinking of a backup solution at some point buy I may just use one of the old hdds when I get the new rig for that...

I rekon I can get a fairly decend system since I am only after the basic components and a relativly high budget (may even stretch to £1500).

Anyway to the point - I havent kept up with any new hardware developments in ages. I know new cpus coming from AMD later this year that support better memory but thats about it. Can somone fill me in if this possible timescale for my upgrade will be ok for the new mobos and cpus?

Come September the prices will look very different to how they are now, or at least i would imagine so, so i wouldnt think a spec now would be realistic of how it may look come September.

Does Conroe come out this summer? If so I would be keeping my eye on that. 2gibibytes of ram makes the PC run a lot smoother, especially when minimizing games or other demanding apps.

Can't really comment on the rest really as the GPU's have yet to be announced.

PSU, Seasonic or Tagan are the obvious choices.
