Is it worth me doing anything?

Long story short, flew with Meridiana for a wedding in Italy.

Initially the flight was cancelled, meaning we had to call up and book the next available flight. I know this sound ridiculous but please believe me.... out of the 5 couples going , 3 got through on the phones with no problems, But another couple and us were on hold for around 20mins+ (£1 a min) then it appear the phone was picked up and nothing happened. Tried a number of different phones, mobile and landline... Nothing. £70 in phone costs later we had to get one of the successful guys (who lived in London) to call up to pretend to be us. Should have done that first granted, but we didn't know them too well and didn't want to be cheeky.

The second incident we had was trying to do the online seat booking, again our friends managed to book in online, but our ticket numbers would not register or allow us, so again I had to call to no success which cost me £50. I had to contact them through social media to check the tickets were correct.

So my question is, considering the tickets only cost £300 and paid around £120 on top due to their mistakes, is there anything I can do to claim that money back? I know it sounds tight, but I am completely appalled at the service.

Depending on the reason for the delay and the time of the delay, you could be entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261.

Paying £1 a minute to rebook sounds bizarre though, why did you do that? Even RyanAir have a customer service line that's well under £1 a minute and if you were in Italy at the time then roaming charges are capped at rather less than £1 a minute for a conventional telephone number.

It's not a delay, it's a cancellation. It still falls under EU261 but different rules apply.

Ok cheers.

We had to call from the UK to their line which was based in Italy. There was no other number and we used the same number as the previous customers.

MeridianaDear Passenger,

with reference to your reservation EM**, we regret to inform you that your flight IG***, leaving from LONDRA GATWICK to NAPOLI on 20****, has been cancelled.
In order to offer you a flight change or a refund, we kindly ask you to contact our Call Centre at the following phone number: +39 078952609, option 2 (open every day from 07.30 a.m. to 11.00 p.m.).

When I type this flight number into the claim site, it says invalid.

See this CA page https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/w...nsation/if-your-flights-delayed-or-cancelled/

It's unlikely IMO, but this bit might work for you:

If you get a replacement flight

The airline legally has to help you with things you need while you’re waiting at the airport for your replacement flight. This includes:

  • food and drink
  • access to phone calls and emails
  • accommodation if you’re delayed overnight, as well as journeys between the airport and the hotel

The airline should give you vouchers to get these things at the airport. Ask someone who works for the airline if you’re not offered anything.

If they don’t give you help at the airport, keep receipts for your expenses and try to claim from the airline later. Airlines only pay for ‘reasonable’ expenses - you won’t get money back for alcohol, expensive meals or luxury hotels.

You'll need to complain directly to the airline.

Near the end of the page there is detail on reimbursement, who to complain to, and phone numbers etc.

If you ever need to call abroad again use this site. There may be cheaper alternatives but I do not know them. I used this site a lot as my g/f worked in Borneo over the past 6 years and she rarely had internet signal strong enough to hold Skype etc. This site saved me some massive bills.

Hope you get some compensation back ref the calls you made!
