Hi, does anyone know if you can leave an airport on a connecting flight? Flying to Australia and looks like may have a 14 hour transition time in Hong Kong. Any ideas if can head out to explore for a while.

Thanks.

Yes you can provided you observe any Visa requirements that may be necessary.

They don't expect you to sit in the airport for 14 hours :p

Actually they do if you don't have the ability to enter the country - try just wandering out of the airport in Russia if you've not applied for anything to allow you to do so.

To leave the airport you need to pass through immigration into the country in question.

Thanks for the replies. It's only 14 hours, but still gives a day to have a mooch and check out all the food =]

When I went to Australia I had a 10 hour wait for my connection. Wasn't worth the hassle leaving the airport, I just sat at a bar, had a drink and read a book.

Visit a Tom Ho Wan's. Amazing Dim Sum for the price, the original one had a Michelin star.

It's a bit out of the way from the airport, probably an hour away plus probably another hour standing on the street waiting. It's very good though and cheap!

I would get a first class lounge pass - The Wing, and wait there. Free food, shower, and perhaps a massage.

Although you can go and explore, with 14 hours that would give you like 11hours in the city which is plenty, you can even go up Victoria Peak if you are so inclined.

Even with a visa it is an ordeal!

More fun trying to leave with an expired visa :o

You can leave if you want, but as many have mentioned it really depends on how long your connect is.

I fly a lot and unfortunately connect a lot. As as general rule of thumb any connect of 8 hours or less is just not worth leaving the airport for.

Ballaches with security, potential ballaches with a visa ( as a British passport holder this isnt so much of an issue) and how important is it that you leave the terminal?

I do know someone that intentionally extends their hold through Singapore on a trip to Australia to take advantage of the 'night life' there....so unless thats your bag?

Most international airports cater well to allow you to kill time, and even have the ability to sleep if you want to in pods etc.

The only time I have ever regretted not leaving the terminal was on an international hold that went through Hyderabad.....my god an awful airport.

Yes, just get through security. You'll have what, 10 hours free time if you take in to account check-in 2 hours before plus an hour each side for security.

I think he said that in the first post ;)

I'd go for it. Assuming you've never been to HK before it'd be a great experience. Who wants to sit down in a non-descript airport lounge when you're presumably been doing that for 10-12hrs on a plane, and are about to do it again for 10-12hrs on your next flight! Get out there, stretch your legs and see the sights. But be realistic with your time.

On a connecting flight you'll usually be checked in already. You should have your second leg ticket so can just pop straight to security with your hand luggage and pop straight through.

On trips that have to involve a stopover I usually try and book a flight that either gives me only a couple of hours or betwee 10-18 hours, the latter being long enough to have a quick tour round somewhere like Hong Kong, Singapore or lesser stopping places like Casablanca and Qatar. Always nice to stretch your legs and "tick off" another location, even if it is only for a few hours.

As menioned above we are lucky enough, as British passport holders, to have great access to many transit locations visa free or visa on arrival.

I've had it both ways before, sometimes have had to check in on the connecting flight when they don't transfer your baggage for whatever reason.
