Mooching... in your house
Hi chaps,

I've got an Airport Express purely for airplay, but am having some issues.

I've set it up to extend my current network (standard rubbish sky netgear router) and it seems to be working according to the light indicator and reports proper function on both the Airport Utility apps on my mac (on lion) and on my iPhone 4S.

Yet... when on my iPhone i change to the AE for airplay, it takes a while, then when it does fire up and start playing music it is really intermittent (very similar to streaming something over a really bad connection)...

Another interesting point is that the Airport utilities are NOT reporting either my iPhone 4s or my MBA as being connected, the only connection is the list is the mac address of my netgear router... :(

Could anyone shed any light?

EDIT: ahh, makes sense really, it was intermittent due to the shocking wifi abilities of the netgear (since the devices weren't connecting to the AE), so the question is, how do i get things to connect to the AE and not the modem/router?

Your best bet would be to hook it up to ethernet and have it start a new wireless network which sour Air and iPhone would connect to.

... but, I need it to extend the network to a part of the house with a not-so-good connection, and also I don't need speakers where the physical base router is...

After investigating, it turns out that an AE can't extend my network from my crappy Netgear DG834GT, so I reckon if I get sky to upgrade me to a more modern "N" router I might be ok...

I ended up having using a combination of home plug and an extra wifi access point to eliminate all these problems.

It sounds drastic but you should be able to do it for under £100 and at least have stability everywhere.
