Airport Extreme - Data Backup

Afternoon,

I have a Airport Extreme with a 1TB Drive attached which my Mac Pro and MBP use to share my data library (Music, Photos, Apps, Downloads etc) - Centralised Data "Server" if you will.

I need to implement a backup solution but I'm unable to find a suitable one.

I have read that it is not possible for Time Machine to backup a network share, it can only backup internal and external drives.

So I am trying to figure out how to backup the 1TB USB Drive which is attached to the AEBS.

I read about Time Capsule but this only seems to act as a "Backup Drive" and not a storage drive.

Am I being stupid? Is there a easy solution which I can't see?

AFAIK you can also use TC as a NAS buy partitioning the drive, i.e. 1 partition for TM and the other as a network drive.

So for example, if I bought a 2TB drive, partition it 1TB a piece, half as Storage, other half as Backup, that would work? Attached to AEBS.
