Airport Express & usb printing

Just so my understanding of AE is correct:

If I purely want to print wirelessly from a usb printer, I only need to connect the AE to the mains/printer and NOT the adsl router?

Cheers.

That's how I thought it would be.

In this light (wireless printing only), is the AE a bit overkill here- there's obviously cheaper print servers, which also wouldn't need a power plug adapter too ?

As I thought. Can't quite decide if the AE 'n' rating is hugely advantageous compared to getting a 'g' rated Belkin unit. (on mbp)

The later is much cheaper and won't require the Apple plug adaptor (how much are these anyway?)

Ah, ok.

Think I musunderstood from these posts re. AE:

The power socket on it looks removable, is it? (ie. can you just use a 'World Travel Kit' like with the MBP power supply?)
I've already checked the power voltages and it says 100-240V AC, 50-60Hz which would make me assume it's made for use in multiple countries so the power socket would have to be removable......

Not sure how familiar you are with the MacBook/MacBook Pro power adapters?

Well, it's virtually identical..

Instead of having the trailing cable you have the option to slide on a plug, yes? Well the AirPort Express is the same, it's entirely removable, in fact it's just a "8" connector, so you could buy a little lead and plug it in via that (with an adapter) if you're travel one didn't slide on.

I remember that thread :)

Anyway, it comes with the adaptor to plug straight into the socket, and it just pulls off so that you can change it out for a trailing cable or international plugs.

Ended up with a Belkin unit

However, it seems now that there's no Mac installation software/drivers.

Phoned Belkin who were barely aware of their own product. Grr.

Anyone know of another way of making this work for just printing!??

How about you get a 2nd hand Airport Express with G then you should be set, they are far better devices for wifi printing than most usb print servers, there was a review, i belive on rev3 or cnet stating it as the best USB Print server

It appears the Belkin unit won't work, so an AE is inevitable.

It was purely the fact the Belkin price was 1/2 that of AE.

I presume by 2nd hand you mean ebay?
