Akasa Eclipse 62 - help on improving gpu airflow / reducing hd vibration

One of my mates is running a g80 sli rig and to get more airflow to his cards and get rid of the drive vibration he is thinking of removing the raptors from the hd bay on his Eclipse (and possibly remove the HD bay itself) and relocating the drives to the 5.25" bays.

He has 3 choices I think.

Which is better.

1. He could actively cool these drives with say a Scythe Kama Bay cooler and mount them with some nexus drive mounts to dampen vibration. The Kama Bay means he is left with only one optical though.

2. He could purchase a couple of expensive smardrive 2002C's and mount the drives in them. They are supposed to be about the best drive coolers/noise isolators around but obviously with no active cooling temps might be a problem with 2 of them mounted on top of each other.

3. I told him he would be better of getting the akasa side panel with fan for his gpu's, and leaving both his drives as is but separate them a little bit so the front fan can get air into the case. And to get rid of the vibration - he should mount the raptors with rubber grommetts through the circular holes on the side of the drive bay. I know some people on these forums have used grommetts big enough so they can insert them into the circular hole in drive cage so the grommet is making contact with the drive.

Would these nexus ones do the job or do I need something wider like the silentx kit which I can't find anywhere :

Any advice appreciated

Move hard-drives to the 5.25 bays, look at the Akasa Eclipse Club thread for pics...... keeps my rig super cool... ;) with no obstruction for the front 120mm fan, gives much better cooling.

could always suspend the drives in sewing elastic in the 5.25in bays, can't hear my spinpoint in there at all and it used to be the loudest part of my setup.

Do raptors really need active cooling?, couldn't he just bungie mod them into the 5.25 inch bays and see how it goes?.

Okily dokily.

So I move them to the 5.25 inch bays.

How do I cool them then ?
Which option below is better ?
My hard drive is set in one of these twin fan 5.25 housing as shown... ;) Excellent cooling.

why do they need active cooling? if you can jam them in shuttles with only an 80mm fan to cool the whole system i don't see why there would be a problem bunjee-ing them into an airy 5.25in bay in a well cooled case?

I have my samsung spinpoint in the 5.25 inch bay at the moment and its running at around 30oc. I know a raptor will run hotter than this but i cant see it needing active cooling tbh.

BFG_9000, do them 2 small whiney fans not bother you?.

Well I don't fancy my drives running over 50 degrees which they will without active cooling. Also shortens their life span. I thought it was a given that these drives needed to be cooled.

Hi M8, The HDD housing fans are really quiet, and are very effective in keeping my hard drive cool..... plus a breeze to install... ;) :D

Is that a Vantec cooler because if it is, then it would be too noisy for me. Had one before. Will probably advise him to leave drives as is, and add the Akasa sidepanel with the fan to cool the gpu's. Will eventually move the raptors to 5.25" bays.
