I'm shortly going to buy one of these to house my new Windows 2003 File Server.
I have a couple of questions I need answered:

  • How noisy are the stock fans? If they are noisy what should they be replaced with?

  • What is the maximum amount of hard disks the case can take? I've seen some contradicting reviews.

There aren't stock fans. You have to buy your own. I'm a silence freak and I have a Akasa Amber at the front and a huge Panaflo at the back both on a fan controller. quiet at 5v, and at the back can shift some serious air on full.

5 harddrives at the front. could put 2 more in the floppy bays. And there is a bracket that can be mounted below the psu holding 2 more (iirc, not got it here to check) The bracket gets in the way of large heatsinks though.

What sort of fans would you recommend for it? I'm looking for good air flow but with minimal noise.

I'd recommend pretty much what I have. Except rather than an Amber at the front, get one of the Scythe S-Flex fans. Hearing good things about those.
A fan controller is a worthwhile buy if you want both cooling and noise. My fans are all slow as possible when I'm watching films etc, and only up them when required, my pc is near silent.

Have a look at the Akasa Eclipse 62 Club Forum for all your answers, plenty of pics there to look at....... ;)

I'm almost ready to order thsis bad boy, one last question:

Can the case take 5 hard disks and a floppy disk drive all in the standard drive cage at the bottom of the case, without using the addional cage at the top of the case as my cpu cooler is so big that I'll be taking the top cage out.

I've had a look through the owners thread trying to find an answer but without much luck.

i would be able to tell you by around 2:30pm if nobody has answered by then, i have a new eclipse sitting at home that arrived this morning :D

from what i could tell i think the bottom cage would take 5 hard drives max

Yes.

There are 5 internal bays at the bottom, behind the front fan.

Right above them are another 2 bays that are open at the front for Floppys, etc.

Edit:

To help explain:

Make sense?

Excellent so I can get a Floppy disk drive in bay F1 and a harddisk in F2, correct? :)
Yup will fit fine, obviously it won't have the front fan blowing over it, so put your coolest running drive in there. Alternatively your least important drive, just to be cautious. (There is no reason why it won't be fine though, I've seen loads of rigs with harddrives without direct cooling and they have all been fine)

OCUK are now supplying the Eclipse with 120mm fans front and rear, there is another thread somewhere about what fans are supplied with it.

Yep, my one delivered on the 14th had x2 Akasa DFS122512L fans fitted. Clear plastic ones, thought I had posted a pic of them but can't find it atm. I'll see if I can post one later when I get back home.

They seemed ok and fairly silent but i swapped them out for the two Noctuas I ordered as everything I read (apart from OC's product description page) said there where no supplied fans.

Perhaps they got so tired of angry calls from customers who ordered the case without proper research and discovered it was lacking fans that they said, "Sod it, we'll install our own fans." ;)
