Akasa Eclipse - Which Fans & How Many?

Hi There...

I'm putting together a new build inside an Eclipse. Main bits and pieces so far are a Conroe E6600, Arctic Freezing Pro 7, 7900GTX, 2 HDs, 1 optical drive. I'd like to get my feet wet with regards to overclocking, too.

What I'd like to know is, how many fans would you guys suggest I put in the case to start out with? Do I really need 4, or will 2 suffice for starters.

Also, when it comes to fans, which ones? I'd like the thing to be quiet, so long as it doesn't interfere with the cooling. I can always go down the route of a fan controller, but I wouldn't even know where to start with those.

I liked the look of the Sharkoon golf ball fans, but they seems to be as rare as hens teeth in this country right now.

Your comments would be most welcome!

Actual case fans, you can only fit 2, 1 x 120mm at the back, 1 x120mm at the front.

I'm using the Akasa Ambers, bit pricey but nice and quiet. I have 3 in mine, 1 is on a Zalman Fan Bracket (only about £3) which i just fitted today.

Whats more important temperatures or loudness?....

Now, after using a PC for years, like many people i'd opt for more silence, since the 120mm fans are gonna push a lot of air around anyway. Put it this way, my 2 ambers are doing nearly as good a job as my old case did with 6 x 80mm fans which sounded like a jet taking off.

Hi There...

Thanks for the reply.

I'd got it inside my head that there were 4 case fans? Must be losing it!

I'd heard that the Ambers can be quite noisy?

I've seen the Eclipse with some blue lighting inside, so any idea of any decent LED fans that aren't gonna sound like a washing machine on it's spin cycle?

Yeah, I'd seen the roundup that CustomPC did - hence how I discovered about the Sharkoon Silent Eagles, and their availability in the UK.

This review roundup seems to go against some other stuff I've read about fans, too - as an example, the Nexus fans are supposed to be great, but get bad reviews in the CPC roundup.

A question regarding a fan controller - can I use one with any old fans, or do the fans need to be something specific to use with one?

I think that as long as they have a 3 pin connector you should be OK. I think if you drop the voltage too far though, some fans will stop and others will start to make a pulsing noise, as my Thermaltake thunder (hehe) fans do at 5v.

7.5v's min seems like a good idea as the fan will still be operating within normal tolerances and should still shift quite a bit of air.

Don't know how the Ambers could be noisey, my chipset cooler makes the most noise, only other thing i hear is the raptor.

AcoustiFan DustProof Quiet 120mm, got 2 of these on order, read they where real good. cant w8 to get them into new case when they arrive. a bit more ££ thou, so hoping they worth it :)
