Akasa integral ESATA

I am thinking about buying one of these as my bro wants more hdd space (he only has laptop), anyway this enclosure says it only supports up to 400GB hard drives - why is this so? What would happen if I plugged in a 500GB, would it not detect it, or would it only "see" 400GB?

The reason I ask is because the difference between 400 and 500GB hard drives isn't much and I would obviously prefer to get him the biggest drive I can.

I asked this in the HD forum but no one seemed to answer...

Any help much appreciated.

400GB seems a bit odd to me. Normally external enclosures are limited to 500GB. Sorry i can't help you more with this.

However i can try and pursuade you not to buy the akasa :p I had one and it lasted a week. All it looked like was a fancy enclosure for a generic/crappy pcb. It's also quite plasticky and doesn't feel or look that well made.

I would advise going for an Icy Box 360AStUS (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-004-BT) as, even though i don't have one, many people rate them highly and the company is experienced in making hdd caddies. That's the one i'll be going for next time i get an enclosure.

Thanks for you reply, the pic on OcUK looks terrible, however after finding a review on google the "real life" pictures look much better. Also the fact it comes with a PCI bracket for connecting SATA will be very handy for me to steal off my brother :)

Only one concern, I dont see a "GB limit" on this enclosure so does that mean I can put in any size drive or is there a limit?

I don't know, sorry. There isn't much info about it on the website. Try asking rpstewart, he seems pretty knowledgable when it comes to this sort of thing.

You probably did what I did and was looking for "<number>GB limit" but after I read what was included I noticed it at the bottom lol.

I've got one, works fine. I've had it more than a week mark1 ;)
Well i must be unlucky. I would still get the Icy Box over it though if i were to buy one now.

^^That's exactly what i did fobose :p

Bit expensive  Comes to over £40inc delivery, I may as well buy a hard drive for that price.
That's why i bought the Akasa the first time round and look how that turned out :p

Plus, it doesn't necessarily have to cost you £40inc delivery, if you know what i mean ;)
