Akasa Internal Card Reader Not Working?

I've got an Akasa internal card reader in one of my 3.5" bays but I don't think it's working as nothing happens when I stick an SD card into it.

Device is specifically an "Akasa AK-ICR-01 Internal Card Reader".

I've got it plugged into my mobo in a 1394 port. It doesn't seem to appear in the device manager (though I'm not sure what it would appear as).

It has a couple of lights on the front, but they are always off. Is one a power light?

I'm probably going to RMA it, but I'd like to check I've not made a school boy error.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Simon

I have that, it's suppose to connect to the USB headers on the mobo. It takes up 2x4 pins since it has a card reader and single USB socket :)

Hmmmm... somethings still not quite right.

I've now got it plugged into a USB2 slot on the mobo and the lights are on. But Still nothing happens when I plug an SD card into it. I can't see another drive in windows explorer.

Should I have some software to install or drivers?

Thanks
Simon

I'm sure I responded to a similar if not same thread, you need to check the pin outs of the mobo with the connector on the Akasa and make sure they match.

EDIT: Found the other thread, had Akasa card reader as well so not the same so soz for the above. :)

I have no way of checking the pins - the Akasa is a single 9-pin connector block and not separate pins. The Akasa site has no technical details to illustrate how they are arranged, but even so: (1) it's supposed to be compliant with mobo USB standard and (2) I couldn't change them around even if they were wrong.

Should I have any software to install with this? a driver disk?

I have a folder called "C:/Program Files/Multimedia Card Reader/" with a couple of things in, but I don't recall installing them...

Thanks in frustration!

Don't know if this will help Revenant, but I have the same card reader on my windows vista pc. After I installed it, nothing appeared in device manager etc, until I plugged my memory stick into the USB port on the card reader. It then installed drivers for it automatically and has worked fine ever since.

Worth a try I guess

Thanks Tk7. I've plugged my USB camera into it and that then pops up a new D: drive which I can browse. But I stick in an SD card only then D: disappears from explorer again.

At £12 a pop I'll get another to see if that works and RMA my current device if comparison indicates its broken.

Anyone who has an internal card reader... Can you please tell me what you have in your "/Program Files/Multimedia Card Reader/" Folder?

I have:

/FreeDos
/FreeDos/command.com
/FreeDos/KERNEL.SYS
/InstallSQ.exe
/shwicon.exe
/Sunkist.ini

If I try to run the InstallSQ.exe then I get some missing dll's, so it may be that I don't have all the files I need...

Thanks
Simon

If the front USB works on the card reader then that sort of proves that the connection to the mobo is fine. Are you sure the card you're trying is fine, what type of card is it? Normal SD or a SD-HC card, a SD-HC card won't work.

The card is fine - I've got 2 SD cards with digital camera photos in. I can access them if I put them in a camera and plug that into the USB port, but not if I put a card into the Akasa card reader.

** BUMP ** Can anyone please provide these?

My card reader didnt require drivers under xp or vista. It came with them so you get the pictures to show which is sd / mem stick etc. but that was it. It was supported out the box.

1. Is that the same Akasa card reader as me?

2. When you say 'It came with them', does that mean that XP came with them? or the card reader? :)

Cheers!

are there any jumpers on your motherboard you need to change to enable the usb header?

sometimes to use the onboard ones you have to disable the ones on the mobo backplate by changing a jumper
