Akasa viper as case fans, is it worth it?

My plan is to have push / pull on a megahalems, upward rear exhaust from p180 case and in ward front. So that 5 vipers total.

Do I need the CPU power connector to allow mobo to manage the speed on the CPU or do they come with adaptors.

Similar question for case fans?

Also will case fans just max out at 1600 without any kind of control. That would be noisy.

Halo

I should add that the totoal cost of the fans + cooler is £100. I know I could get something like a CoolIT twin rad, but the fans are reusable in any future setup so there is some longevity to the fans for any future upgrade.

I really think i will try a water loop at the end of the year.

My CPU setup at the moment is a QX9640 on a crappy cooler ATM. I want to get the baby to 4g

Hi mate

I have two Akasa vipers attached to my IFX-14 in push-pull config and they are excellent fans. Their maximum rated RPM is 1900 and not 1600. However in my case they go above 1900 sometimes and the maximum rated airflow is 83.63cfm more than akasa apaches:).

They are 4 pin fans so have PWM feature. So if your mobo has 4pin cpu header then they their speed will vary depending on the load cpu is placed under and how hot it gets. So hotter the cpu gets, faster the akasa vipers will spin. However if you connect them to 3pin fan headers on mobo, then they will spin at full speed of 1900 rpm + and they will be modestly audible.

You can use Akasa PWM splitter cable to connect upto 3 fans on a single fan header on your mobo with the other end for connecting to PSU molex power connecter.

However there are fan control devices and may be someone can give you better info on those. I think Akasa viper are excellent choice and I am very happy using them to cool my [email protected]. temps never went above 65C in prime and 70C in IBT considering Q6600 are hot chips:).

You could probably connect 2 Akasa PWm splitters together to carry the CPU PWM signal to all 5 fans. However 5 fans running at 1900rpm when your CPU warms up would be very noisy indeed.

It's probably better to go with cheaper case fans and use a DC fan controller to regulate their speed. Some fan controllers have temperature probes so you can have them speed up and down automatically.

You stick them where you want to read the temperature. A heatsink perhaps. Maybe a hard drive case. I think the controller comes with some tape, although I could be wrong.

It's unusual for a motherboard to come without any form of PWM or DC regulation for at least the CPU Fan. Maybe you might be better looking for an automated fan controller that responds to temperature increases rather than just displaying the temperature and expecting you to make the necessary adjustments.

gotcha, yes, the P5Q-E supports CPU fan control but not case speed.

Hehe, not I cannot really justify the fan controller. Back to plan A, slower fans for the case.

I'm glad this thread has come up as maybe someone can help me...

I ordered one of these Akasa Vipers to go on my Akasa Venom CPU cooler in a push/pull setup. My only problem is the fan seems to come with rubber mounts to just fit to the case and not the heastsink. Do I need to get different mounts?

Ah right my mistake.

You'd expect then that considering the heatsink is often bandied about as having push/pull capability that it'd ship with 8 of those yellow fitting grommets rather than just 4. I've not got one myself but a review I looked at had 8 of them in a line with all other components so if you don't have 8 then perhaps you should contact Akasa.

Yeah it came with 4 of those mounts I linked in my last post but they're yellow. They seem to be case mounts not heatsink ones. I've looked around on the net and can't seem to find the ones like my venom cooler cane with. :-(

I meant 8 should have come with the heatsink not the fan.

Cable ties perhaps? Might have to go black or white as yellow cable ties might be tricker to find.

update for those that are interested.

Purchased the Prolimatech Super Mega Cooler (a bit more pricey but it comes with 2 sets of fan clips), as I missed out on the great offer on OCers :(( for the rev B megahalems. Also bought, 3x akasa vipers
and 2x 1000 rpm sharkoon golf balls. All cost around 113 quids.

super mega arrives with Sharkoon 3-4 days before the vipers. So i can run a few tests to see the performance difference.

Am i allowed to say that i shopped around a bit :) but refused to give scan my business out of a long standing principle that will NEVER waiver. Pity Ocers does not have the super mega just yet.
