Hey guys, so I've been looking at buying a new pair of headphones, I want to use them for listening to music from my phone, on the PC and I also intend to use them as a replacement for my Astro A40's as they're pretty much falling apart now. I wanted something quite portable and that's why I like the AKG 452's. I've found the 452's for £59.95, what do you guys think?

Public use or only in home?

If in home only then you want open cans (best for gaming) like HD 595's second hand.

If your after closed then Creative Aurvana Lives are the best ones to go for but they aren't as comfortable as 595's.

You could always just buy koss porta pros for £30 they are very good for the money and then save up for something like Fidelio X1's

Mostly for public use as I don't do much gaming anymore, was looking for something that wasn't overly bulky and I think the 452's look quite nice. Had a look at the Koss Portapro's but they look quite flimsy.

you looked into IEM's?

I would get monoprice IEM's from flubit for £3.50 and then HD 595's for home use tbh as the best bang for your buck setups.

There's some phillips IEM's which come highly recommended too the

and

I just haven't seen the 452's recommended anywhere but their higher end phones do get a lot of recommendations like the K550, K551, K701, K702 and Q701, etc.

So personally I don't think they are as good as other options out there.

Head Fi is your best bet for decent reviews on them.

The best cans for gaming tend to be open cans which are full sized, and the best ones for portable use tend to be smaller more robust options like IEM's or on ears or closed options.

The AKG sound rubbish IMO.

There's not many I like at this price.

Skull Candy Aviator are excellent at about 50 or 60. Warmish, nice smooth sound, lovely mids and good bass. They are excellent for at portable use, they have removable cables too.

Vs the CAL

The CAL has more low end, it's got a nice thickness to it but lacks texture. The mids on the Aviator are better, more detailed, more emotion to the music. The CAL have decent mids but they are pushed back more. The treble is about equal. Soundstage is about the same, the Aviator wins on overall sound imo and it's built better.

I favor the Aviator over the M50 too.

CAL if you want a pair of cans.

SteelSeries Flux or VSonic VSD1-S for IEMs. No real alternative at this budget IEM wise, the VSonics blow everything out of the water, but the Flux has more bassend if you're a basshead :p

You can get the VSD1-S for about £30 from the US version of the rainforest, or about £23 from the states on the bay. Worth every penny, but got to be honest, Ive not heard of the Pistons - there is often a lot of hype about cheap cans be "as good" as more expensive ones, in reality, they may share some of the same sound characteristics but never actually match up.
