If it's purely for competitive play then the K701 because it's simply tuned to be top heavy with the most open stage.
If it's for offline and competitive I don't think you can go wrong with either of the K612 or 712. The 612 extends deeper and has a more linear/balanced sound. K712 is warmer, slightly more spacious with a more refined sound.
The Q701 is a tad fuller and less rough. Soundstage is slightly less enhanced. Resolution is the same and so is every other technical aspect. Some people can't even tell the difference but a good ear will. I would never use any of them for music anymore they all have too much of a rough character. For gaming I think the Q701 has enough bass to make it a better choice but It's not enough to really wish you had one over the other.
I use my K702 all the time for gaming but I tried using it for music the other night and only made it half way through a track before I was reaching for my Sonys. The port mod does add a nice bit of low end for gaming without messing up the positional cues too much but as you say, for music they are a bit too harsh on the top end.
My friend owed me some money so he gave me his red limited edition K7XX that I bought from the MM for on his behalf and they even have the rough upper end even with the bass port and Annie pads.
I found that in some of the environmental noise was a bit soft so I'll prob slap some Q701 pads on them. I blame the LCD-2 for ruining everything else when it comes to bass.
